Gingerbread (aka Android 2.3) on Evo!

I dont know how many people just read the article on engadget (Android 3.0 Gingerbread getting revamped UI, Froyo living on for lower-end phones? -- Engadget) but it seems as though not many, if any, current phones will be making the cut for gingerbread (android 3.0) and also that we're going to be seeing many new crazy high-powered phones being released this fall and winter (consisting of bigger screens, faster processors, 1280by760 resolution!). So my question is do you think Evo will make the cut for android 3.0 or will it be obsolete compared to what is on the market by this Christmas (regardless of whether it gets 3.0 or not)

i hope it makes it to the cut otherwise will be stuck rooting our phones to get it, and i wouldn''t be too happy about it, smart phones are raining this dates and ii hate when they drop a 6 month old device from updates(moment owner before) and will definitely go with some other device or OS

true.. but thats the minimum, so it seems likley that we will get 3.0 but if thats the minimum specs needed imagine what else is gonna be out there.. 2ghz processor, much higher ram, 1280by760 resolution, 4.3" display, 1020p video recording, 12 mgp camera.. it seems like its only a matter of time and it seems like that time is in the near future.. which is awesome on one hand but on the other it kind of sucks because ill still be deep in contract when these monster devices are released.. not that i always need the latest and greatest but i want it to at least keep up and prove to be a worthy opponent by christmas

Eh, I hope it gets it. Part of the reason I went for the Evo was because it was being built up as the premier HTC and Sprint phone that they'd want to keep it updated.

My main concern is that I heard 3.0 finally makes it unnecessary for skin on Android. Not sure if HTC will want to update the Evo if it means you won't be (or need to be) running Sense.

Evo will get it. However, of course the evo is going to become obsolete, just like every other smart phone 6 months after it comes out. Of course by obsolete I mean outmatched, not useless.

The Galaxys, Droids all are in the 4 inch and 1GHz range, so why would the EVO be excluded?

Im pretty sure there will not be a huge influx of phones that beat those specs before the end of the year.

yea the evo seems to be sprints flag ship phone so as of now it seems as though sprint is going to focus a lot of their attention on the evo and keep it up to date so that it remains a worth competitor with whatever is coming out. but that can change very quickly.. i just hope that these super phones dont come out for a while and if they do that sprint gets some of them because i was previously on tmobile and they always got the worst phones

i'm still curious to see battery life on a device running 1.5Ghz and above processors. you think people are complaining about battery life now...

unless either A) chips are made to consume less power or B) battery tech is improved, there won't be much releasing within the next 6 months that's gonna have us wanting it. just my $.02

i can tell you now, B is prob not gonna happen anytime soon.

disagree. really, in 4mon they're gonna release something substantially better than the Evo? i wouldn't hold my breath...

it took 8mon from the release of the Hero to the Evo.
i still think a good year, give or take. think about it...you know Sprint expected to sign new subscribers and extend contracts with the release of the Evo. it would only makes sense to release an Evo2 in ~1yr so those Evo owners will do the 1yr upgrade and extend their contract. that's just smart business.

just because new 1.5-2.0Ghz processors are rumored to be released towards the end of the year doesn't mean it'll be in a device right then. you have to account for testing, then testing in devices. i think VZW shot themselves in the foot by saying they were releasing some crazy spec'd phone by the end of the year. it's not gonna happen.

The Epic is already coming out and it already boasts a better cpu plus a gpu. By the time we get 2.2, 3.0 devices will be weeks away from getting released. Even if we do get 3.0, the devices shipping with it will be far more superior.

I don't know. I feel like this is the route Sprint is going to take:

There will be about 4-5 3G/4G "flagship" phones:

Evo - Flat Screen HTC Android
Epic - Qwerty Samsung Android
Blackberry Phone
WinMo 7 Phone 1
WinMo 7 Phone 2 or (Return of a WebOS phone?) or Google Phone


From this point, there will be iterations of the phones, assuming we stick with the handset maker, (EVO 2, Epic 2, etc) which will have the latest and greatest specs on them. This happening all the while increasing the 4G network. That said, if it's certain there will be a iterative of the phone by next year, Gingerbread (and it's slowing phase of deployment) will likely not be prioritized for the EVO but will become available, but will reach end of life at 3.0. Developers will continue to build for it past that. Then, EVO 2 and other 2.0 phones will last for 2 iterations of Android/whatever OS past that.

Just a guess.

and this is one of the very few things that i dont like about android. i mean dont get me wrong i think that its great that they rapidly develop new software and build and build on their great operating system. but what i dont like is that they leave phones in the dust in doing so.. its fine if they wanna come out with android 2.1, then 2.2 a couple months later, then 3.0 soon after, and knows whats after that, but just keep your phones up to date, make sure that if your releasing these flagship smart phones that they have what it takes to handle the next few waves of os updates.. obviously some phones are meant to be lower end devices such as the cliq, my touch, moment, but phones that are supposed to represent cutting edge technology like the evo, incredible, nexus one, and so on should be able to hold its place as one of the top phones on the market in the months to come

There are a lot of next-gen handsets coming out around the time of the Gingerbread release. Looks like some major hardware upgrades. I'm sure HTC and all of the handset makers are scrambling right now to incorporate the latest tech into new handsets for that timeframe. By the time we get there (Christmas 2010 season), the EVO will be very old news. I'd say there is a 50/50 chance of and upgrade coming from HTC by that time.

As I said before though, it's not too big a deal for us Android users. We always have the option of rooting our phones...which I'll do as soon as HTC stops supporting this one. I'll then upgrade again to the latest and greatest in June 2011. The new hardware is going to be amazing.

another theory that i have is that if the evo does in fact receive 3.0 will it actually be 3.0 in all its glory or will it be some watered down version of it.. for example the my touch 3g will be getting 2.2 but 2.2 on the my touch isnt going be anything like 2.2 on evo or nexus one.. the moment and the hero got the 2.1 update but its nothing like 2.1 on the evo.. the cliq is gonna get 2.1 update but it will be nothing like 2.1 on the droid.. and so on.. so will evo actually get 3.0 or will get some "heres a taste of the awesomeness of 3.0, now go out and get a device that could actually handle its greatness".. and not only that but it will probably take forever to get the update especially since it runs sense ui

the Epic?
it's a 1Ghz cpu and the Droid X has a gpu too. on paper that may say "better", but in the real world, that device doesn't make our phone obsolete. c'mon now.

and the cpu being manufactured by someone else other than qualcomm, offering a very minimal performance increase (you wouldn't even notice), most certainly doesn't make it better.

the Epic also has a physical keyboard. just like the Droid X, you'd be grasping at straws when trying to say it's a vastly superior phone, making ours old news. it would be like comparing dark red to red.

our phone will be obsolete when another 4G phone, be it WiMax or LTE, with front facing cam, 8mp or above main cam, upgraded screen and res (Super AMOLED/AMOLED 4.3+ with a res higher than 800x480), all touch screen, and a processor of 1.5Ghz and above, gets released. it has to meet all of these specs. so far, nothing in the near future has been announced. the Epic comes close, but no cigar.

until then, i don't wanna hear anything about the Evo being obsolete. i guarantee you, anything with the above specs won't get released until 2011. anyone care to wager?

This was my first thought. But consider how long some of the older phones are that will end up with Froyo, I have to think the EVO will get some support. Remember, carriers will want o keep people who are not ready to upgrade yet by product support on the phones they already have. There will not be THAT many phones to fit the hefty requirements of 3.0 so I think the EVO will get it.
