HTC Hero Awake While Charging

Hey, everyone!

I'm new to the forum today, as I am a recent owner of the HTC Hero with Sprint, as of Monday.

I was experiencing the poor battery life and have effectively implemented the work-around that includes disabling the stock Messages app. and installing and using a 3rd-party SMS app., Handcent. The work-around appears to be fully effective for me so far, so thanks to those who helped communicate it here on the forum (you know who you all are).

I've noticed though, that when charging, my wake time percentage is in the 80th percentile, indicating that it's not fully sleeping while charging in an A/C outlet.

First question: Does the phone not sleep while being charged?

Second question: If not, can someone please provide some suggestions of things to look at that might be interfering with sleeping while being charged?

Here are the apps I have installed currently:

Handcent SMS
Facebook (which I do not leave logged in)
Android Lightsaber
Color Flashlight
Fartdroid (... I know)
OI File Manager
OI Shopping List
OI Notepad
Shazam (music recognition app)
Spare Parts

All other applications on the phone are stock apps that came with the phone. Again, when not charging, my wake time is very low and shows signs of properly sleeping since I've discontinued use of and disabled the stock messaging application.

I hope this is enough to get us started in troubleshooting this for me. My apologies in advance if this topic has been covered elsewhere, but I did search the forum and came across some conflicting reports about the expectations for sleeping the hero while it is being charged, hence why I opened a new thread to bury this issue for me.

Thanks for your time and assistance in advance, everyone!
Have a good one! :)

Welcome to the forum! The folks here are very helpful!

I have the same issue. When I posted that my Hero also does not sleep while charging via the AC charger provided by Sprint, I was told that there was probably something wrong with my Hero. I haven't done anythng about it, as I realy don't care what the wake percentage is after charging. The point as I see it is...it always sleeps properly after unpluging the charger anyway, and the battery lasts me throughout the day.

I believe that the awake time percentage indicator is just a tool to see if it is sleeping properly duruing the day of normal usage. Once off the charger, mine sleeps porperly. This is my take, and subject to discussion by the group.

PS I have done the handcent modification, and that is the only ap I am currently using

Well I've had my Hero since October 9th, and immediately joined up here. I noticed as many users reported, and uptime and awake time of 100%. I went and installed the Handcent app, and immediately noticed that my awake time was down to an average of 7%.

However, after using the Handcent app for almost a month, I decided to un-install it and also did a factory wipe. I wanted to start fresh and perform a basic out of box experience to test the true battery life. Granted, everyone's battery life will be different based on use.

So off I went. I'm now using the device as out of box, using the stock messaging app. I also have the Twitter widget logged in and running, and also the Facebook widget. These continue to receive updates as they arrive. I also have Gmail running, and that too is as emails arrive.

I had a full charged battery at 2pm EDT on November 11th. I used the phone for:

1.5 hours worth of talking.
Texting - from 2pm until 11:30pm (8.5 hours)
Web Surfing - 1 hour
Music Playback (.mp3s not Pandora) - 1 hour

Off to bed at 11:45pm. I did not charge the phone during the evening. It was left on my nightstand as I always do. The device also serves as my alarm clock. Woke up at 7am. Replied to a couple of texts that my wife sent while on her way to work, and my battery is still at 63% ( I also have VizBattery installed) and my awake time is at 79%.

I'm not sure where this battery drain issue came from using the stock messaging app, and granted everyone's usage will be different, however based on these results, I can live with this battery life.

Thanks for the feedback so far, I appreciate you both taking the time to share your thoughts - very helpful information and perspective on the issue at large.

General note in response to DanDroid: I prefer using the Handcent SMS application vs. the stock app anyway, as it is quite a robust and customizable app. (and I like the iPhone style bubbles), so I have no desire to switch back to the stock app. (although I realize you aren't directly suggesting I do so) and even marginally risk experiencing any degree of reduced sleep time.

I'd just like to make a friendly note and point out that my core question (# 1) remains unanswered. My goal is to first and foremost establish what the expectation is with regards to sleeping while charging the phone via A/C outlet.

Thanks again!

Thank-you, Sticklerjosh. It would seem that you have identified the root of my problem.

Settings > Applications > Development > Saty awake was checked for me. This should resolve the problem since the sub-text reads "Screen will never sleep while charging."

We'll see how it goes tonight, but I'm pretty certain this will address the problem. Thanks again to all those who took the time to reply.
