No Gingerbread Love...

Saw that Gingerbread (3.0) requires a 1 GHz processor. That means that Froyo is the end of the line in terms of updates for Droid, isn't it?

Pretty much. So much for Googles plan to eliminate the fragmentation problem. Unless by eliminate they meant, make it even worse!

As far as official updates, probably. Makes sense, you can only support older hardware for so long before it begins to hamstring you.

If I remember correctly the droid has the specs - the processor speeds which can be fixed via rooting so im sure cyanogen or pete will make something work ^_^

That is just their arbitrary cut off for which phones they are going to release it for. If you can run froyo on a G1, I am sure you can run 3.0 on a Droid.

This was my thought as well. There are quite a few talented developers in our community, so I'm sure someone will figure out a way to encorporate the features of 3.0 on our phones.

I also read that, only thing I can think of is if the devs somehow trick the OS into thinking theres 512 there or something otherwise its looking like 2.2 is the end of the road...

i still think its pretty poor that my phone will be obsolete roughly 6 months after i got. keep in mind while i didnt get my droid as soon as it came out, it will still considered vzw's flagship until this past april. and overall the droid will only live for one year and thats it.

i call shenanigans. it is one thing for a product to become outdated because something better comes out, but to be made obsolete so quickly?

That's a pretty valid complaint. I got my Droid at launch and I'll be lucky to get through 1 year without it being completely obsolete. But then again, can we really be upset at advancing technology?

Hardly...2.2 isn't even out yet, who knows how far down the road 3.0 is. Plus you should know by know, anything electronic is basically obsolete by the time it hits stores.

i am aware that the article said that google plans to release 3.0 in oct so therefore there is no telling when it available. that being said, it doesnt matter when its available because i wont be getting it anyways.

outdated and obsolete are two different things here:

i know that by the time some sort of computer (also applying to smartphones here) hits the market for consumers, next week another one will hit that has a better processor, more ram, larger hard drive, etc, etc. i'm not an idiot.
but for google to already say in june, with their completed version of 3.0 slated to hit in october (yes i know we don't eve have 2.2 yet and it might 2011 before some get 3.0) this effectively renders my device obsolete as of today. i get 2.2 and nothing more. nowhere for my device to go and i'm under contract. nice.

Does your phone FEEL obsolete now? It won't work any differently when they release 3.0. The Droid is a GREAT phone, I just got mine less than a week ago and it's the best phone I have ever owned.

For those of you worried about fragmentation and upset your device will be obsolete, I think it's being exaggerated. Your phone will still work, just not with the update. A pc running XP isn't obsolete, just older.

I'd agree with blubill and jamo. I mean, I'd rather continue to receive OS updates but even if I'm stuck with Froyo my Droid is the best smartphone I've owned so far. That's not to say that it doesn't have its issues or room for improvement. With the growth spurts that Android has had I find it understandable that they need to ditch the older hardware.

Additionally, it's not like you can't upgrade to a newer device if you're under contract. You'll just likely pay more.

They're fairly synonymous even in their different meanings. You seem to be using the "not current/out of fashion" definition rather than the "not usable" meaning.

no my phone doesnt FEEL obsolete. dont get me wrong, i'm not losing sleep over this. but i do think its a little funny and maybe even sort of a low-blow. That's my opinion just like some people are quoted as saying their droid is the best smartphone they've ever owned. its opinion.

my point is this: smartphones have just started to go mainstream with the 1ghz processor benchmark. i dont care how long the processors have been around, point is, this standard of power is roughly, if not less than, 6 months old. as glorious as my android device is with its replaceable battery and open sourcing, i know i get one more software update and even that is from 2.1 to 2.2. its nothing more than glorified "patch." because it happens to be a phone, i can't pop in a new stick of ram to boost power. i cant evaluate if it would be beneficial to spend 200 dollars on a faster processor or purchase a whole new laptop to keep up with the times.

my 4 year old 'work' laptop still runs xp. it has a dual-core processor with 2gb of ram. its upgradeable to 4gb of ram. the laptop costs approx $1100 new when purchased. if i wanted to run windows 7, guess what? i dont have to do anything. i dont even have to upgrade anything. if i needed to, i could for less than $100. i dont have to purchase a whole new laptop.

my 5 month old phone? no go. i dont get those options. i can use my early upgrade next feb. and spend $200 dollars for a brand new device. thats my only viable option.

i just have trouble understanding why anyone think's this is okay? yes. i know its going to happen eventually, but within less than a year? i think its a little excessive is all.
