Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

The way I see it is this (for branded Orange customers):

The current stable version 1.5 build number is 2.73.61.66.
After the first part of the OTA release (which will not actually change anything noticeable) the build number is 2.73.405.5
Then, after the full version 2.1 OTA release, that number will probably not change (although I can't get clear evidence of this).

Mind, I've been wrong before.

Edit: The HTC support website informs me that a ROM update for Orange customers is available (don't get excited, this is the one from February) but the installation instructions are odd. All it says is; "Installation Instructions: ROM Version:2.73.61.66 for Orange". Now, does this mean the version that is required in order to install the update or the version that will be apparent after the update? Clarity. Obviously not a big thing in this case. :p

From what I can gather:

  • 2.73.61.66 is the latest build for an Orange branded Hero
  • 2.73.405.5 is the most recent unbranded build, and can receive the OTA update currently available
  • 2.73.405.9x is the build after the first OTA update
  • 3.32.405.1 is the 2.1 build after the second OTA update
Hope that makes it clearer!

Today my T-mobile HTC Hero wanted to install 2 updates. I installed them, then the phone rebooted. I checked the software version, but it still says 1.5
What were these updates for?

Hi!, Can you check in your phone settings in the "About phone" settings to see if you now have an option in there at the top called "system software updates" that wasn't there before?

T-Mobile UK has recently published a message on its forum saying that the second part of the update should be rolling out in mid July:
T-Mobile Discussions - Discussions - G2 Touch software update
I hope that such links are allowed. If not and it is removed, search T-Mobile forum for it.

Cheers for this, it explains a lot.

I restored the old ROM from T-Mobile to try to initiate the update (as suggested on here) but I didn't receive it. This explains why, I.e, that they pulled the update! Thanks for telling us T-Mobile!

At least it will be coming in a few days, then the 2.1 in mid July.

Has reverting to the original orange stock Rom solved your issue now? I appreciate that you'd rather have 2.1 running, but making sure the phone returns back to working order when it is re-flashed is the main priority I guess.

Had a lazy day, only got up at 12 :p Just put orange 1.5 back on and everything seems to be working fine again, guess I'm just gunna have to wait for orange to get there act together

So after lastnights rumour that Orange would update at midnight, I rang them this morning, and Jonathan was my helper. Midway through me explaining what the Hero was, and how Orange airs the updates. In a snotty way he said, "Orange doesnt update any phones" So I asked him, "How come you gave us the last update then, do you even know what the HTC Hero is..."

And like a little girl, he said hold on, need to talk to my supervisor, while listening to the Black Eyed Peas on hold..(And having a piss) Jonny boy returned and told me that "Orange has the update." So i said, "Umm okay, when do we get it" He said, "Im to low on the ladder to know when, but just know, we have the Update and havent set a date yet or I havent been told it"

Its 13:53 UK time and this conversation was like 5mins ago.

Hi! Have you checked that you're definitely using the latest version of HTC sync? Should be version 2.0.33 which is here on the HTC forums. HTC Hero - Software Download

Please note that htc recommends that you remove any previously installed versions of HTC sync before installing the newest version.

yes, I downloaded the ht Sync as I had accidentally deleted the version on my SD Card as soon as I got the phone (last week).

I want to go back to the branded ROM because 3 have dissabled my data roaming which I am assuming is down to the fact I am no longer using their branded ROM

When I goldcarded it I used 2.73.405.5 and when I put the orange one back on I used 2.73.61.66, do you think using a different generic one would help?

Glad to know that you got your Orange phone back to the original state without issues.

I believe the rom you used was the same one I originally posted on my guide, so I will continue to warn Orange customers off of it at the moment.

Cheers for the feedback.

Hopefully the network providers will get the proper updates sorted out soon, so that nobody gets left behind.

It would help massively if the people on phone company call centres ever had a clue what you were trying to ask them about. ;)

Well, earlier this morning Sean.ellingham said that he was able to debrand his Orange branded phone and then update to 2.1 by using ROM version 2.73.405.5 which is what you have said you have used, so I thought you may have a used a different version, oh well!

I noticed this today as well. So I can only assume that not all Orange phones are the same, and therefore react in different ways to this fix..

It's certainly good to know that the Orange 1.5 rom can reverse the Network lock problem that some are having with this fix.

I can't say that I'm going to be recommending Orange customers to try it now though.

Do you know if there is there anyway of differentiating between Hero models ie. later or new versions of the handset?

I've just got off the phone to Orange, an unrelated matter, I asked about 2.1 and any possible release dates.

The tech department wouldn't give me a date but after pushing them they said "sometime later this summer". That could mean July, August or September.

When asked if they thought they were providing a decent service the reply was jawdropping. "if you're not happy there are other networks" then they hung up.

My Hero is in a box on it's way to Orange.

Out of interest, I never bothered to update my branded Orange Hero (UK) from its shipping build - 2.73.61.5 (because it said it would wipe the phone, and I couldn't be bothered ;)) When Orange finally get their finger out and release the two 2.1 updates, will I get the direct update (ie. like a full service pack) or do I need to move from 2.73.61.5 - 2.73.61.66 myself first?

I have an unbranded Hero with an O2 SIM running 2.73.405.5
Try as I might, I can't get it it to get the update. I've tried setting the clock weeks/months ahead, turning it off, on again, doing a rain dance nearby - nothing...

Anyone got any thoughts? I'm considering reinstalling the original ROM again (the same version as is installed currently) to see if I can kick the OTA update into life

Any suggestions/opinions?

Yea I have an option for "system software updates" that wasn't there before

This means that you have the Preparatory update for 2.1, the full update from t-mobile should be coming out mid-july it seems. Apparently it takes this long for the phone companies to put all their branding and bloatware on your phone.

Unless you fancy trying the goldcard trick I think you're going to have to wait it out.
