standard mini-usb for Eris charging

I just plugged my eris into my computer USB last night to try to recharge it, and now it won't recharge at all, even with the adapter that came with it.

:(

does your computer sleep after a while? mine does

2 things

1. when i plug the wifes storm into the pc at night, the pc goes to sleep, it actually drains the life out of the storm to the point it has to be on the real charger for like 15 minutes for it to come on

2. a usb charge is not a real charge but a conditioning/trickle charge. it may take a LONG time to get a full charge from the usb to pc setup.

leave your phone on the wall charger for a while, it'll wake up

Can anyone confirm that we need a 10 pin usb cable?

i was doubtful myself, but yes indeed, a std 5 pin mini usb will not sync, just charge.

I don't know about that. I am not home now to count the pins, but I have been connecting the Eris to my MacBook with a standard Mini USB cable -- the same that came with my camera or hard drive or flash card reader...

(Usual trapezoid shape, not the one-side-squared-off cable)

Thanks Caddyman.

I was stressing out that I blew out my new Droid Eris, but it turns out the USB connector wire was faulty! I took it into the store and swapped out different parts to see what was wrong, and the phone & the adapter functioned fine with another wire.

I guess plugging it into the PC blew it out. Cheap Chinese garbage.

I got a replacement and it's working fine to transfer files to and from the laptop over USB. I pulled down the Android USB drivers from somewhere, and it worked perfectly.

This phone is really impressive.

Thanks again.

I just got the Eris yesterday, 11/30. I love it all, accept the battery life. Through what I have read is that the USB chord should be able to charge the phone through a computer right? I had it at work today and had it hooked up to a PC desktop and it charged just fine, but know that I am at home and have it hooked up to my MacBook Pro Laptop it says it's charging but the battery indicator does not change at all when unplugged. Any ideas on what is going on? Should I go to Verizon and get another USB chord and see if that is the case?

My wife and I each have an Eris, so I got three sets of these from Amazon. They all work fine, and now we don't have to worry about charging, as we have chargers for all vehicles, work, home etc. At about $2 per cable (including shipping) it's hard to go wrong.

Also when we bought our phones the Verizon rep told us a Motorola Razor (my wife's previous phone) charger will work for an Eris, but it won't charge as fast. Ok to use as a back up, but not as a primary charger.

Interesting. My phone charges slow as balls on my blackberry charger. I have honestly only ever charged it once on the included charger. Hmmmm.

The charge through a PC is a trickle charge. It's kindof only for emergencies.

I was experiencing no charging at all, neither through the PC nor the provided adapter. The battery icon on the phone didn't have the lightning bolt in it and the little red light didn't go on. As long as you have that, my guess is that your cord is fine and that you're just seeing the results of a trickle-charge by PC.

The battery is rather weak, I would agree. From my understanding, this is the case with most of the smart phones though...

Not vouching for that particular charger, but I'm not sure what kind of plug it has that doesn't fit -- the Eris socket and HTC-supplied USB cable do have a funny shape, but a standard mini-usb plug fits also. I did the manual update using another USB cord, and have verified that the phone charges with my Garmin GPS's AC and car charger. I will try my wife's iPhone charger tomorrow (the phone end of the Apple cord has a proprietary connector, but other end plugs into the little cube with a standard USB connector)

It is mini-USB, not micro-USB, which I gather many phones have now, but mini-USB is also quite common; you probably have a few cords from cameras, small USB hubs, etc.

You do want something that specs at least 1 Amp output to match the supplied charger (though I believe it will charge more slowly connected to a computer or other lower current supply)
