Incredible change to LCD poses problems for all of us

Is the sky falling??Not actually I'm just frustrated with the fact that I have a phone that I count on for business that needs to be hard reset a lot (TP1)and I can't get my hands on this phone. Again with the advertising that Verizon employ you would think that one would be able to get the phone in a reasonable time frame....

Well, show me you have an idea what you're talking about. Why is it wrong?

I'm not lowkey but I will respond.

First, I do agree that LCD doesn't automatically equal bad.

But it IS a completely different product with completely different design. Both have their pro's and con's. These are not simply useless "buzzwords" to grab out attention.

You can google 'lcd vs amoled". Or you can read through this thread for some basic explainations on the differences:
http://androidforums.com/nexus-one/44207-amoled-vs-tft-lcd.html

In a nutshell, LCD screens require a backlight, whereas AMOLED screens provide their own light (being built from LED's and all that)

and...

on amoled, each pixel controls it's own color/brightness, since it is an individual LED, so black on AMOLED is an off pixel technically, on LCD black still has a light behind it. basically colors are more rich and vibrant on AMOLED

Great explanation. Apparently i really didn't know what i was talking about! Thanks to quint for the video too. Wonder how LCD screens would impact sales on the incredible. I suspect that these new screens wouldn't be used for a few months and by then the description would've changed on the order page/ads. So consumers couldn't say "but i ordered one with an amoled and got lcd. Wtf"

I think most people wouldn't quite know the difference. But its good to have, and will soon be industry standard i'm sure. But I truely do love the look of my AMOLED screen, its absolutely gorgeous.

I really doubt that the average user will even notice the difference unless they are specifically compairing their screen to another one and looking for a difference. And I would also guess that the majority of people are not sitting around tech forums all day, or even researching their phone online.

Most people just go to the store, play with a few different phones, listen to the sales guy give crappy marketing information and then buy whichever one they think is prettiest and that's that.

So with that in mind, I don't think it will really effect sales all that much, at least not right now. Once they start using the LCD screen and letting people know it might have a small impact but even then I doubt it. Its not like they are going to make a big deal about "downgrading to the LCD", they will just note it as a fact in the specs. The average user won't know or care that there is a difference.

I also think that the majority of people who DO actually care (like many of us here on the forum) are "geeky" enough to have gotten the phone before the switch. Anyone getting it after is not going to be your "OMG, I am Super Tech Nerd and must have the latest/greatest right now!" type of person.

So that's my opinion on the whole thing, based on the fact that in my experience the average people does not know or care about the specifics of the tech world. I would bet that if you went up to 100 random people and asked if they knew the differences between LCD and AMOLED, 95 would say "uhhh... my tv is an LCD... I think, and it's pretty nice. Uhh... what's AMOLED?"

To be honest this is in fact one of the reasons that I wanted the incredible. In fact if this is true the Companies aught to be advertising this and letting there potential customer's know that they are not getting the exact product that they are advertising. I have not looked as of late but I am curious if in fact they are still saying that the incredible is supplied with the Amoled Screen??

I have not had the best experience with Big Red In fact if I could I would have gone with the new I phone but I acn't because this is a company issued and payed phone so the only complaining I can do is here....Sorry Guy's I'm a bit Po'ed about the way this company functions and talks to people.

All of this being said I can only hope that this phone will be better than what I have experienced in the last year with the Touch Pro1.

You hit the nail on the head, this won't affect sales. The average person can't tell the difference and frankly probably doesn't care as long as the phone works well and looks good.

As of now they have not yet made the switch and as such, have not changed any marketing materials. Once they start adding LCD's to the mix (they will be using both at that point) they will let customers know which one they are getting.

Regardless of my opinion of Apple (which isn't good) I could simply never use AT&T and right now, they are the only choice for iPhone's. I can't speak for the entire country but where I live their service sucks. And it's not like I am out in the sticks or anything, I am in freaking Northern VA, 30 minutes from DC! The simple fact for me is, I can use my phone is tons of places that AT&T users can't. I have experienced dropped calls less than a dozen times in the last 7 years (and no, I am not exaggerating) I have been with Verizon, while my AT&T friends drop a dozen calls a day.

But anyway, I am sorry that you have had such problems with Verizon. I wouldn't go so far as to say that they are a perfect company that I have had perfect experience with but they are far better than the competition. At least in my opinion.

The AMOLED is more saturated, but whether that's better is in the eye of the beholder. LCD TVs are more saturated than plasmas, but last time I checked plasmas are generally considered to have more accurate color rendering.

(The plasmas have better black levels, too, which does seem to be a strength of the AMOLED.)

If they use a PVA LCD, that is even an "upgrade" technology, if you will, from standard TFT (the other common "upgrade", IPS, is used in the iPhone 4). Both PVA and IPS are common in higher-end photo- and video-editing monitors.

As for outdoor viewing, I haven't seen any display that is easily readable in direct sun except transflective ones, like on my old iPaq, or maybe one of those "e-ink" displays as on the Amazon Kindle. Personally I'm just amazed that my phone has more screen res than my first desktop PC. If anything, I would equip it with a pull-out antenna and booster amp (for use when plugged in) to get better reception before I'd worry about which kind of screen I was getting.

I will also have to agree with Terabithia as far as Verizon is concerned even though I have no experience whatsoever with At&t. My reception over the last few years has always been steller with Verizon! Heck I was down in Dc a couple of weeks ago and man is that city covered! I even had reception in the tunnel's! I suspect the Gov. might be Verizon customer's Lol! In the end what really gets me about Verizon is when they do not have an answer there are No result's. They also try to B.S the customer as if they just fell off the turnip truck! Heck I think I knew more about there phones then there tech. support did......Anyway I am hoping the Dinc solves all my issue's and I live happily ever after, that is if I get my phone when they say I will get it and it has an amoled screen......

Well People I guess we shall see! I can only help that Android is more stable than this WM? I suspect this phone would have been fine had they given it the proper juice to keep up with the software! And as far as the two screen go Idono I have been think it will suck big time not being able to see the screen out doors.....Hey one more thing do these phones typically come in on the exact delivery date or will I be pleasantly surprised and get it early?????

I love all this hysteria over a screen that NOBODY has seen.

SLCD will probably be more visible in sun, at maximum. LCDs are probably going to be less efficient. So it's possible that the AMOLED screen at 100% will be more visible that an LCD at 60%, and that they have the same current draw. We really won't know about it's performance until somebody gets it in their hands.

SLCD has 40% less draw than current LCD? That's new to me! No really, that's new info to me! Got some links for this?

My current inc screen is very viewable in direct sunlight. Dunno what the problem is out there?
