EVO vs iPhone 4 Speed Test

I have both phones. Using the Speed Test app, getting consistent results.

iPhone 4 is 3 to 4 times faster, almost every time.

Before make the final decision on which to keep. Any suggestions? Ideas. Is ATT iPhone really that much faster without 4G on Evo...

Test results are in line with what I'm seeing on my co-worker's iPhones. They're getting 3mbps (3000kbps) on 3G while I typically see 500-800kbps if I'm lucky. This is in Houston, TX.

For what it's worth, I've yet to see 3mb even over 4G, which I usually can only get outdoors. 2.8mbps is the best I've seen so far.

Sprint's data network was almost enough to get me to return my Evo, but I liked the phone itself enough that I'm just living with it.

I wouldn't bother responding to this thread fellas. That was his first post, hint hint.

For anyone who actually believes this guy, I'll go ahead and give you an example. I'm out of town for the month and my sister has the i4. My evo in this area registers at 0.9 Mbps. Hers is at 0.15 Mbps (on edge because AT&T goes in and out of 3G).

Edit: to the OP, hope your i4 gets the software update soon because it's pretty buggy. My sister is considering the Evo now if the proximity sensor and other bugs doesn't get fixed within the 30 day apple return policy for i4.

My buddy and I did similar tests. I have Evo he has 3gs. At the first bar mine was about 1.5Mb(3G) his 0.1Mb. Next bar was 0.8Mb(4G) and 3Mb for iphone. The place after that was about the same. Upload speeds were consistently faster on 4g but who cares about that.
This is Charlotte area.

I didn't realize that ATT's 3g was quite that fast. I have tried 4g in Raleigh, Charlotte and Atlanta. The max i've seen is 3.2Mb.

In the handful of areas ATT has hspa+ and it isn't congested, sure it can reach those speeds. Still doesn't change the massive dropped calls etc if your moving around.

Tapatalk. Samsung Moment. Yep.

I just took a speed test now, and I got 1.01 Mbps d/l and 0.43 Mbps u/l. But over a period of time, I would affirm the post above at 0.50-0.80 Mbps. What's funny is that based on most of my tests, 3G is faster here in my area than 4G. Go figure.

PS: The test was done in my room here in Stafford, TX

Shoot half the time I barely get 3mbps on my home cable connection, but it is always faster on the Evo than laptop or desktop, yay! I get about 500kbps on 3g around here. Only time I've been on 4g oddly enough was for about a minute it picked up a 4g signal on the highway at least 20 miles from the nearest city. In that nearest city, I couldn't get a Wimax signal that is supposedly there.

I have had similar results as the OP at work with my EVO. my partner has the Iphone 4 and when he runs the same speed tests he is getting 2000-3000kbs per test and my highest has been around 900. And that is been done is several places. I was a little disappointed. But when loading pages on the web his is not any faster.

Speed tests are there to help you find bottlenecks and fix them.

But - I guess they're also there to have yet one more numbers game to play! ;) :D

I'm wondering how many people have really bothered to check out a speed test on their home network... See -

Speed Test - dslreports.com

And if you get a chance - see if you can't run that during a weekday sometime - and then run it again between 5 and 6:30 pm. You might be surprised at what happens to most broadband services at peak hours, when everyone rushes home from work to blog and download.

Also - I've seen complaints in other forums about how accurate it is to get a server closest to home to get the right results and how that is sometimes.

Uh. Well, ok, if that's what people say.

Personally, I tend to not speed test, when I do, out to the general part of the country where the servers are that I'll be accessing for my normal web use.

And I tend to do that when I have problems (such as watching Bab5 for free, online) - so that I can at least get an idea if it's just network congestion or the target server giving me grief.

But - that's just me. ;)

Finally, if there's anyone who just can't get over mobile network speed envy, then your EVO offers a simple solution for that:

  1. turn off mobile network
  2. turn on wifi and cheat
  3. lie your butt off
  4. profit!

:D :D

PS -

I want the one with the higher geebee's

Let's not stop there, I say we go for the one with the heebee geebee's!

PPS - Anyone who thinks that speed tests matter for anything else is, in my opinion, missing the entire point of this post. If you still feel bad about your phone, talk to tmaxey1, he has a lot of experience caring about how fast his browser runs and that sort of thing.
