Will this phone be considered low end by holiday season, meaning no gingerbread 3.0?

So, just reading around the forums and online sites, I guess Android 3.0 or gingerbread might be out around the holidays.

Although the vibrant does meet the minimum requirements, google seems to want 3.0 only to run on superphones. If 1ghz, 4 inch screen, and 512 are min requirements.. This leads me to believe, that by the holidays, this phone will no longer be considered a superphone, there probably will be a 2 ghz. 4.3 inch, 1gb phone out.

Why do I bring this up? Well I'm asking because, for those people who do not wish to root, and are depending on t-mobile/samsung updates to 3.0, what if samsung never releases a 3.0 update for the vibrant. This is the only reason I'm thinking about this phone.

Just reading various sights, seems like google has made it clear, gingerbread 3.0 will be for superphones, and all other phones will stick to 2.2/2.1. I'm thinking by holiday season, samsung is going to put this phone in the "I'm sorry, you are stuck with 2.1/2.2 cateogry" because they probably will have a superphone out by then.

If you can't get 3.0 on this phone via a true update, is it worth it? How can anyone find out, what Samsung has planned?

I guess I don't want the behold II issue to happen on this phone.

Besides if T-Mobiles Version doesn't get Android 3.0 we could use root to get it from anyone else that has it. Just about the top 6 carriers in the USA got this phone. All of Europe got this phone. Asia had this months before we did. All they really have to do is develop for one device then distribute it for everyone of course with the little modifications needed to each user. If AT&T gets it we will as well Captivate is exactly the same as Vibrant except for casing basically.

How much weed have you been smoking HtcEvoLemon? Do you really believe that Samsung would be stupid enough to drop support for a phone released all over the world?

In any matter once I get this I will be upgrading to the HTC Vision which is due for October and known as the Flagship Android 3.0 device on T-Mobile ofwhich will be the first dual core device in the mobile world.

In other cases the thought of Samsung's 1ghz being low end is preposterous. Sprint will not release a 2ghz device this year may be motorola but not sprint.

This won't be considered low end for a while maybe mid range by summer next year but never low end.

I actually don't smoke weed, nor do I use drugs of any kind. I also don't think my question was unwarrented, especially since there are many Behold II users who were promised updates but never given one.

You can wait for gingerbread to come out. Once it does, there will be rumors about huckleberry pie coming and then you'll be waiting for that one.

Seriously, who cares about gingerbread. There are no details out yet to even consider waiting for it or care if any phone you buy now can be updated.

Which means of course more sales going through the roof. Of which also means continued support because if they don't they are basically out of business as far as their smartphone division goes. Samsung isn't stupid. Behold 2 users at least got updated to 1.6 android. At first it seemed like eh but it surely solved the lag issue and many other issues as well. The 1.6 wasn't half-assed.

There is practically no risk in using Custom Roms to upgrade. If you are too afraid to do it then thats your fault and your problem. Root and Custom Roms do so much for Android phones. If you don't want to take advantage of the opportunities that are given then that is on you. And you can always go back to the original files in the off chance something goes wrong.

The great thing about Android is the customizable abilities it provides us with.

From what it sounds like you don't really want this phone and are just trying to validate your opinion so just sit back and wait for the HTC Vision due sometime in October or whatever other Android device you want or even non android device.

I am a Behold 2 owner and I am not even as paranoid as you. As far as is an update worth if its not OTA? why not ask the guys over at the Nexus One forum that brag about getting updates on the daily about that? Most don't get OTA they use a fabulous thing called root and custom roms because they are too impatient to wait for updates OTA when they could have it now and want to get the best out of their phone.

I don't think there will be any phones with Gingerbread this holiday seaons since its most likely a rumor, so i wouldn't worry about it. If there is an Android update, I am sure Samsung would implement an update to their flagship smartphone.

Eh no big deal, that's how the mobile phone world works, the next big thing is just around the corner, you'll always end up waiting for the next one. If you have the money just buy something now and enjoy it.

It's not that your question was unwarranted, it's just that many former BH2 owners have spammed their Samsung hate fest over and over on these forums, claiming that Samsung will treat this phone just like the BH2.

The simple fact of the matter is that Samsung is releasing this phone worldwide, including the four major carriers in the US. This can't be compared to the BH2 fiasco in any way, whatsoever. People that hate Samsung will ignore this simple fact, but it's the truth. You can almost guarantee this phone will get Gingerbread. Samsung isn't a dumb company, regardless of what the forum warriors believe.

Whenever a new version of android comes out, you can root your phone and put the newest os on, as long as your phone can meet the specs to run it. However, rooting your phone voids your warranty. So if you don't want to void your warranty, you are at the mercy of the phone carrier and manufacturor to release an update to the newest os.

The reason I asked the question, is because Samsung had promised Behold II owners that they would get an update to android 2.x... but they never released it. Lots of angry behold customers.

I guess you can root your phone, personally I don't really want to void my warranty. So I dunno.

Don't even compare the launch of the Galaxy S to the debacle that was the Behold 2. From day 1 it was never really all that popular, I have seen a total of 1 person with one since launch(I myself had a brief 2 week tenure with one and helped find root for it)

The Samsung Moment got a 2.1 update before the HTC Hero, that phone definitely sold more than the Behold 2, and hence warranted some support.

Samsung is putting a ton of eggs into the Galaxy S basket, especially considering they are launching on all 4 Major US carriers and in 110 countries around the globe, so they would be committing financial suicide by dropping support for this phone.

Just some food for thought.

Rooting is a form of hacking and it isn't like spreading peanut butter on toast. Not to mention they are usually broken to some degree or another or have a chance of bricking the phone. This is why there is such a large disconnect between regular people and stuck-up nerds living day in and day out in a forum. You can't even come in to ask a question without the locals acting vicious.

My advice is that tech in general, especially cellphone tech right now, is going at such a rapid pace that it is pointless to wait for the perfect one, because it will always be trumped in a matter of months. For someone with a lot of disposable income, get whatever, whenever. For regular folks, that two-year contract is a good cycle to follow, and paying outside of contract is crazy expensive because carriers can subsidize up to $400-500 of a phone's cost when bought with a contract. The Galaxy S (Vibrant) costs $700-800 on ebay or more , unlocked. If you like it, just get it.

I'll be holding back on my first Android phone until something nice looking comes out. For me at least, aesthetics and build quality are far more important, and you will get much more mileage from the looks of a phone than from the tech under the hood. Most Android phones from midrange to high will perform about the same right now and from my experience, an ugly, un-ergonomic, or squeaky phone that's falling apart can really break the experience and elicit tons of buyer's remorse, even if it did come with a 10 gigahertz processor. It also makes my life easier when choosing a phone, since I think most of them are ugly so there's usually just a couple to choose from. Because your feminine side is sometimes right about these things, and better with money.

Hopefully Samsung will release an Android variant of their Wave phone, because that thing is snazzy. Or someone roots it.
