Gmail Push Issue

I'm a new EVO owner that came from the Palm Pre. On the Pre, I had the option to "receive email as they come" or to have the mail application check for mail every x minutes. Why do I not have an option like that with the EVO? The only option that I can find re: checking email is to set it up to check for new email every x minutes or manually (click refresh). I'd love to have the emails come immediately (and I want the better battery life of having emails pushed).

Am I missing something? I've done searches here/google but all that shows up are battery problems/solutions...Any ideas?

It sounds like you are using the stock e-mail client from HTC (the one where you can add multiple e-mail accounts).

For push e-mail you have two options:

Use the gmail app (located in the apps section). This will push e-mails as soon as they are received (make sure gtalk is running in the services - menu>settings>applications>running services). If you have multiple e-mail accounts, either have them forwarded to your gmail account or you will have to use the second option;

Exchange services for push e-mail. That works through the HTC mail when you set up new account click on exchange active sync.

You need to use the Gmail app, not the native mail app - that will give you push email. It is the only setting available in Gmail as well, there's no "scheduling" of when it checks. It's push, or nothing.

I deleted the account from the 'mail' application and am now using the Gmail application. I still am not getting the mail instantly. When I go to menu>settings>refresh in Gmail, it'll download it...Hmmmmm

To add, I have Auto-sync and background data both enabled as well as 'sync gmail' under the accounts tab.

Even when using the Gmail app, I'm still not getting emails immediately (sometimes 10-15 minutes go by before being notified of new email). And gtalk is running under the running services window.

i've noticed this also. more often than not the email is pushed to my evo immediately, but every once in awhile my evo gmail is updated like 10 minutes after i see the new email at my comp.

Tried the stock mail app.. 100% no go since it does not do push.

Tried Gmail mail app and didnt like it.

Also Maildroid and quick delete.

Now using K-9 Mail and fairly happy. Allows me to view all new messages from all email accounts in 1 screen rather than flip through them. Emails take about 5-20 seconds. Once in a while this does not play well with wifi and slow on email, its rare.

Sometimes the gmail app needs to be reset. You do this by going to menu>applications>manage applications and go to both the gmail and gmail storage and clear the caches in each. Then restart your phone.

If that doesn't work, try K-9 mail. Most problems with that app that I've read (never tried it myself) is force closing.

^^^Jealous.

I use a combination of the native mail app and Gmail. The native email app is not as functional as Gmail, but it actually "checks" for new mail every once in a while. Something that Gmail does not do. So it alerts me, I clear the alert and just go into Google and refresh.

It is a perfect system and obviously cannot be improved upon.

I can confirm that the Google Talk service must be running to recieve Gmail notifications. Dont Autokill this service.

What??

Jeez, when this phone first came out there were 10 threads about how to kill Google Talk if you don't use it in order to save battery life. Everybody was like "i can't kill it it keeps coming back," and "you have to root your phone and get a special app."

Then there were like 10 threads including this one about how Gmail push services are messed up and people are like "mine works," "well mine doesn't." Now it turns out that people that didn't screw around with their phone to begin with never had a problem.

I swear, I flashed 4 different radios and the one that wound up not breaking 4G was the first one. I tried 3 home replacement screens and then went with HTC Sense.

Maybe I should just stop messing with the apps.

Thanks for the solution, by the way. I'll remove Google Talk from Startup Auditor.

To be fair, even with a fully working "PUSH" gmail with the native app, it doesn't always gets mail as fast as the Pre did.

I think this guy has the same problem that I do, it's not that push doesn't work, it does, it's just not as fast as it was on the Pre.

SOMETIMES - it'll get the mail in 10-15 seconds, sometimes it will take up to 10 minutes. The Pre ALWAYS got the gmail almost faster than it showed up on the computer.

Probably one of the reasons the EVO has such better standby battery life than the Pre does.

Just got my EVO, so excuse my ignorance... came from bb storm (hated it)

So i setup my email (gmail) accounts with the native mail app on the home screen and im not getting my emails instantly, I messed with the settings some but still not coming through instantly (or within a min or two) it will just download 5 emails or whatever comes through in that time span

the bb had emails come "live" or within a min of showing up on my laptop... is there something that im missing or is that just the way it is?

thanks for any help

I started using Nimbuzz for Google Chat.. Dont want my Google Talk email address as my administrator password and wont backup contacts to it since its an email address I give out.. More security syncing to a non published email address, same as wont give out the administrator email to Google Chat..

K-9 Mail & Nimbuzz work.. Emails are quick.

Didnt care for the Google Mail app in BB and dont care for it in Android.
