i'm pretty happy with the stock keyboard on my HTC DESIRE but i get really annoyed that there is no fast key for switching between the input language.

i live in sweden and write often in either swedish or english and would like a keyboard that has a button on it somewhere for fast switching between these two languages.
as it is now, i go into options and select the language which is not so bad to do once a week but its a pain when your switching 10 times a day.

and why do reviewers say the android keyboard is no good and always praise the iphone one? is the stock keyboard really that bad? whats a good alternative?

You know what you need? You need the Scandinavian Keyboard!
I've set mine up so that I can toggle quickly between the Danish and English layouts by doing a simple right-swipe, and that toggles the dictionary as well.

As for your other point, I lived for a year with the Samsung Galaxy which is a pretty stock Android. Let me tell you, the stock keyboard really does suck. The HTC one is a lot better. The one above is even better. :)

Okay, let's take it from the top:
Settings->Language & keyboard->Scandinavian Keyboard settings->Swipe settings:

  • Enable Swipe should be checked, of course.
  • Swipe right (for example) should give you a load of options:
    • Change case
    • Symbol
    • Backspace (I have this on Swipe left)
    • Space
    • Close keyboard (I have this on Swipe down)
    • Previous keyboard layout
    • Next keyboard layout <--- THIS is the one you'll want
    • Previous dictionary <--- THIS should not be assigned
    • Next dictionary <--- THIS should not be assigned
    • Move cursor [...4 directions...]
    • Disable
  • Assigning a keyboard layout swipe adds another menu item Keyboard layouts to swipe between; if you see this you're on the right track. Tick only those you intend to use (Swedish and English, probably).
  • Assigning a dictionary swipe adds another menu item Dictionaries to swipe between; if you see this you're on the wrong track.
  • Also, in the section for Language Settings, make sure that Choose dictionary is not selected.
With these settings, things should work for you.

wow, thanks for taking the time to make those great instructions! much appreciated and it all works!! awesome!

i had the NEXT DICTIONARY assigned as well as having the CHOOSE DICTIONARY ticked so after that, its all good.

i noticed that the swedish predicts words really good but when typing in english now, there is no prediction and i do have the english dictionary. any ideas on that?

Hum, looks like a bug perhaps? ... O yeah, here it is:
Issue 61: english keyboard and dictionary not linked said:
I like the feature where you can turn off custom dictionary choice and have the dictionary match the keyboard. This is very helpful for me as I can see the keyboard and therefore know what language the phone will try to check my words against. It works splendid on the Norwegian keyboard however on the English keyboard I get no dictionary. I had to switch it back to manual selection and then I can flick through them as I want.
 Let's hope it'll be fixed soon! Go put a

star on it right away please!

BTW, something I found while looking for an existing bug report:
In Android 2.2 FroYo [...] you can simply slide on the spacebar to change language.
