I really want to love my HERO but.....

went to sprint store and they updated to 2.1........6
Now I want to smash it.
Looking to root as a last resort however......have been reading that you cant root if the update ends in 6. and people seem to have problems with usb drivers or something like that if you are on a windows 7 machine.

Can someone clarify if rooting is still an option for me.

If you did the recent software update then you patched up your ability to root. You would have to reflash the stock ruu to undo that update, then you can root.

I downloaded the 2.1 stock ruu on my laptop....htc sync is installed as well..
cant seem to find what to do next.

Any help would be appreciated.

Run the .5 RUU and it should put you back to .5 of the 2.1 update.
Then you can root by using the instructions there. They also have a link to the .5 if you need it.

Post #2 gives you a link to the .5 version of 2.1.

Make sure your computer can see your device, just like to initial directions to root, and then just run the .exe on your computer. Your computer must be able to see your phone through the USB cable, however, before it can "update" it.

Here are some steps taken from the rooting instructions. Installing HTC SYNC should get you the correct drivers if you don't have them installed already.

Step 6: Make sure USB Debugging is ON (checked) on your Hero. Go to Settings > Applications > Development > and make sure it is checked.

Step 7: Plug your phone into the computer via USB, Make sure that the connection type in the Notification Pull-Down Bar is "Charge Only", not "Disk Drive" or else this won't work.
If your computer asks you to restart after the new drivers were installed, do that now.

Then run the .5 EXE file.

thanks for the instructions....followed exactly...

ran the 2.1 ruu exe ....asked me if I wanted to switch from 2.1.....6 to 2.1.....5

I said yes...then it was waiting on boot loader ...then got error
" error 171 usb connection error"

Damn !!!!!!!!!!!!

Any ideas ???

Fresh 2.0d if u could still find it somewhere, a lol old but it works the best for me out of the other roms

Start with Fresh 2.1.2. I just rooted mine a week ago and started with this. Then I Flashed the Wireless Tether fix and OC Kernal and this thing is night and day better than Stock. I actually like it again.

Ok...back to enjoying my Hero without wanting to stomp on it. Am using the recovery image that came with unrevoked. Works great.

You said you wanted to stomp on it before you rooted. Is that because of all the 2.1 bugs? If so, are you implying that by rooting it, it took all the bugs out? I am hesitant to update to 2.1 because I am aware of all the bugs with it.

No..its still buggy. But not as bad. Still have dial lag.....still waiting 10-15 seconds when pressing a contact or a number from call history. Conferenced 2 calls last night because of dial lag by mistake. I'll put on a different ROM soon. I hear Fresh is pretty good. Or wait for Cyanogen to put out something tasty.

as i was told that i could and it would allow me to downgrade to
RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_1.29.651.1_signed_release

im running windows 7 64 bit
and have the latest htc sync and my phone syncs with it just fine

not sure who told you that you could downgrade to 1.29.651.1 after you had been upgraded to 2.27.651.6 but you can't. the boot image was changed when going to 2.1 via the official updates. You can go back to 2.27.651.5 but that's as far back as you'll be able to go.
