Droid X To Be Next Android 2.2 Phone

After the Nexus One got the latest Android upgrade a couple weeks ago, Google is now working on pushing the so-called "Froyo" update to Motorola's Droid X.

The Droid X isn't even scheduled to be released until July 15, and a report on Brighthand.com says that the Android 2.2 update will come in the next 2 weeks. So in other words, users who buy a Droid X phone are going to be prompted to update it almost instantly.

The 2.2 update, which increases performance, adds a portable Wi-Fi hotspot feature, and gives support to the new mobile Flash standard, is expected to come out to the majority of Android devices by the end of the year. Older phones, however, like the G1, Hero, or Samsung Moment, will be locked out of the new operating system.

Motorola's standard Droid phone, as well as Samsung's Galaxy S series, should be among the next devices to get Froyo.

I hope so! :D

IMHO, the Droid X should have been released with 2.2 Froyo to begin with. That would have been a really big splash, making it the first device to ship with it. However, we should see an update late July, early August anyway, not as many tweaks needed as with HTC Sense devices. So it should be fairly soon.

Any phone can get 2.2 from today to whenever. The code is out for everyone, its up to htc, motorola, samsung, sprint, and verizon to let it out when they are done putting sense or motoblur on top of it and testing it. I say the droid gets it in the next few weeks then the evo then X. I could be wrong, its anyones guess.

Why would Motorola or VZW be foolish enough to allow a new 2.2 update until the dust settles with what is in the box? They both deserve the tech support headaches they get if 2.2 is launched the same week as the device.

as much as I want 2.2, I agree with you. what a nightmare trying to diagnose issues on a brand new device the week after it launchers with fragmented OS's

It is not happening. Also, why would VZW or Motorola push 2.2 for the Droid- before or the same week of the X release? That also is NOT happening. Motorola will do nothing to push the old Droid now, especially with Droid 2 coming in August. The one saving grace for Droid is it is a mature device now, so perhaps they could launch 2.2 on the Droid first, but not near the X's launch date. If Droid gets 2.2, that will mean Droid 2 will ship with 2.2.

My guess is September for 2.2 for Moto devices. I have little faith in HTC & VZW being quick, so I will not even guess for the Inc and VZW. HTC plus VZW equals Team Slow ;)

Then again, I have an Inc, so :(

I'm betting 2.2 will be out by the end of august for all three moto phones. they have already started sending out 2.2 to some beta testers for the droid. they said X will get it by the "end of the summer" and the droid 2 launches in august. I just don't see them pushing the update OTA to the X the very same week it launches.

btw good luck with the Inc getting 2.2 by the end of the freakin year. That is the one and only reason I will never buy another sense phone from Verizon, unless of course they learn from the mistakes made with the Eris and keep their mouths shut about a software update thats 6 months down the road!

+1, I remember the Eris forums and how crazy it was in there. Man that sucked thinking we were getting the update on this date, no wait this date, wait when are we getting it again?

I really hope they do learn from that and I believe end of August sounds about right.

I agree the Inc may be a lot longer than people think right now, but I am OK with that. Flash lite works almost as good as full 10.1 and games will suck regardless, due to no keyboard (Over 90% of Flash games need one, based on my testing over 400 games on the N900).

I am happy with the current speed and can tether with USB, so I am good for now. Using the Inc on VZW is already a HUGE step up for me, from the G1 on Tmo ;) Kind of like going from driving a Pinto on a small dirt road to now driving a Porche on the autobahn :)

Its not gonna take that long for it to upgrade to 2.2 for the INC, or any other HTC sense phones. The problem with 2.1 was that coming from 1.5 which was not even supported by eclair, there was so many modifications that needed to be made, plus HTC hacked the software up so that it would work in the first place. A jump frmo 2.1 to 2.2 is relatively small, compared to coming from 1.5 to 2.1. If the dev's have already got working froyo custom ROMs running then I think its safe to assume so does HTC, but they have to do their testing and Q&A which would probably put it towards august/end of July. But definately long before the end of the year. I mean to think that cyanogen can put together Froyo faster than HTC and he just got an EVO seems pretty crazy.

Don't make the mistake of thinking there is bigger jump from 1.5 to 2.1 than 2.1 to 2.2 just because the numbers are further apart.

Actually thats not how I came to that conclusion, I came to it by actually porting a 1.5 to the 2.1 kernel source and realizing how HTC and Sprint hacked it to peices just to get it to work. And then by doing the same thing on the new kernel porting 2.1 to 2.2 which im currently running on my EVO and was alot easier.
