When I go to Accounts and Sync and try to sync my Google contacts
It show up that the last contact sync was May 10
The calendar sync and the gmail sync are up to date but the
contacts sync will not refresh. Tried searching for the answer
but can't find any help
Thanks

Mine had the same hangup with the contacts. I went into accounts and sync, pressed Google, verified the checkboxes were all checked and then hit sync now. I may have had to uncheck calendar then sync now, then recheck calendar and sync again. Can't remember the exact order of events but it finally woke it out of it's slumber and started working. Been working ever since without problems.

If that doesn't work, I'd probably use the "remove account" button and then set it back up from scratch using your account name/password. Shouldn't take long at all and maybe that would spring it back to life.

I have the same problem as well, but it looks like the update is actually happening. When I change a contact on the phone, it updates in Gmail and vice versa - it just doesn't update the "last updated" info, nor does it drop the "update in progress" circular icon (for contacts). I think I'll live with it for now - I'll do a reset if it stops working.

Know what u mean. Another idea might be to try Settings > Applications > Manage applications > Contacts storage and clear data. Then see if it syncs on its own normally or try forcing sync again as before.

That worked for me too, but first I had to power off the phone (was getting a lot of process failures after the clear), power up, then I had to force a Google Synch (ignoring the process failures), Power off/on again, then log out and back on to Facebook and finally re-link my Facebook contacts to my Gmail contacts. Whole process took a little over an hour (I had a lot of Facebook contacts to re-link).

Less time than a total reset or total memory clear, by a long shot.

After going through all that - all seems to be working properly.

Regards,
Bill

It worked! My Contacts on the HTC Desire failed to sync with Google after firmware v2.2 update. I tried this method as described above, deleting the cache in HTC People (Contacts). Switch the HTC off and on again, re-sync, and Contacts are all back.

NOTE: Do not go and access your Contacts (to see the progress of the data) during this re-sync process, otherwise the re-sync will cease and you will end up with only some of the Contacts. However, just re-sync again will solve the problem.

So none of the solutions that I read and tried worked until I stumbled upon this one.

Go to
settings>applications>manage applications>all>
Select Contacts Storage or Calendar Storage and clear all the data.

Go back to the manage accounts screen
settings>accounts & sync
and select the gmail account you want to repair. Uncheck and recheck the individual sync boxes. They should work now without an issue.
