Sorry in advance for the long post.
Ever since I got my Evo on launch day, I ran the gamut of emotions, both positive and negative that has been chronicled on these message boards.
During the first week, the positives outweighed the negatives, but there was one negative that really put a damper on my enthusiasm, namely the abysmal battery life I was getting. After reading the tips on prolonging the battery life, along with purchasing a car charger, I was able to (barely) make it the whole day (~11 hours) with the Evo dying on me before I got home.
The next week, Steve Jobs announces/demos the iPhone 4. With the introduction of the Retina Display, a bigger battery, a "better" antenna and the fact that my family has a Mac, iPod Touch and iPad, the pendulum swung towards checking out the new iPhone. Had they been available when I tried to preorder, I would have. After reading the issues have been reported, and how poorly Apple is addressing them, being shut out may have been a blessing.
With the iPhone unavailable and having more time to play with my Evo, I got to appreciate the Android OS and its openness vs. the Apple OS. Android is defintely not as polished as IOS, but it has come a long way, and it will only get better, I assume, with Froyo.
I was back to leaning towards keeping my Evo, but there was one physical issue I had with it; the infamous light leakage. It was not that noticeable at first but got progressively worse. I had called Best Buys a few times during the month checking to see if they had any in stock only to keep getting the same answer of "no". Last Saturday (day 30), I decided to call one more time and to my surprise, the Best Buy I originally purchased my evo from had 3 available. I drove over, went through the exchange process and verified that my 0003 hardware version has no light leaking through! I downloaded the update and put it through its paces on the 4th and was very happy to make it through the day with 26% battery life left!
I now have an Evo with no light leakage (I hope it stays that way), and much better battery life. And now that the 30 day return policy has lapsed, I can finally enjoy my phone and not obsess over whether or not I should return it and wait for the Droid X, the iPhone 4, or any of the Samsung offerings... at least until early next year when more "latest and greatest" phones are announced for release next Sping/Summer. Then the obsessing and anticipation starts all over again. One big plus for me to stay with Sprint: I love being a Premier Customer so that I don't have to wait two years to upgrade. With the pace of these phones with more bells and whistles being released, upgrading once a year seems long enough as it is!
