if i want to rip a bluray movie for my EVO, what file format is best to use?

last time i saw this discussed was before the release of the EVO when people were using handbrake. I found this website: Blu-ray Ripper - 5 ways to rip Bluray, free Blu-ray ripper

What is the optimal file format for a movie on the EVO? Also, how much space is it going to take. I only have about 5 gigs free on my SD card and i suspect I would need to compress it somehow to fit.

Get a bigger card or possibly more cards is my only suggestion. Movies take up space, no way around it.

Sorry I wasn't specific enough: I'm wondering what the file size is going to be for a ripped blu ray, and also a ripped DVD.

I can't seem to find a bluray ripper that works, so now I'm using handbrake to rip a dvd. Problem is that I only have about 5 dvds but I have about 80 blurays, so I'm doing this more as a test run to see how it goes.

Good thing is that DVDs are dirt cheap these days so I can just hit up the bargain bin at walmart and probably find what I want.

I always suggest DVDFab for DVD's and now also works with Blu-Ray. DVDFAB "Blu-ray to Mobile" can easily rip & convert Blu-ray disc to any format and all popular portable devices.

As far as resolution, i put the width at 800, and scale the height appropriately, so i do not lose the aspect ratio. if you are going to watch the movies on a tv with the hdmi0out, you may want to use 720p standard.

I need help with this also. I am using DVD fab and can not get bluray to play on EVO when in MP4 format. I can get DVD's to play just fine. I would like to rip some bluray's into 720P and play via HDMI when I travel. Any help would be appreciated. I have a downloaded demo of Gran Turismo in 720P and it plays great via HDMI. Now if I just get the blurays to work also.

I just tried ripping 'book of eli' twice with DVDFab. I selected the 'DVD to Mobile' option and then 'to MP4". Video looked great the first time but I set the audio up to 128 kbps. The audio was crap so I tried again at 32 kbps which is the pre-set setting for it and while I got ambient background noise, I could not hear any dialogue by the actors. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I dont know what settings you are using, but if you are not hearing dialogue, that means you are only getting the left and right surround channels, and the dialogue comes through the center. you either need to downmix the 5.1 channels to 2 channels, or select a 2 channel audio source when ripping. be careful about selecting a 2 channel source though, as many 2 channe sources are the directors commentary and not the actual audio.

awesome! I was indeed doing 5.1 and I set it to stereo instead. Now it works great on the PC and EVO.

I've been using DVDFab (only 30 day shareware though) because my one dance with Handbrake didn't work. I've also had DVDShrink recommended to me.

after doing a DVD successfully, ive attempted to rip 'the dark knight' on bluray a few times to both mp4 and avi. It gets up to 0.19% complete and then the estimated time to complete drops to 0 and it just sticks there

I don't know. Ripping a Bluray implies breaking the encryption on the disc. I don't know if your software is able to do this. I don't own any Blurays or a BD drive but with DVDs you have to use either an on-the-fly decrypter or you rip and decrypt to your hard drive and then transcode the result into whatever format you want.

Also make sure you have a serious computer to do this. Transcoding large compressed files like Blurays takes some serious CPU cycles. More cores the better

edit: Also remember this when discussing these things: backing up DVDs and Blurays is legal under fair use but breaking encryption is not legal. It's a stupid situation and while most people see nothing immoral with breaking encryption for fair use backups, the fact remains that it is not legal and different forums have differing policies regarding such discussions.

understandable. certainly not trying to rock the boat. im adamantly against piracy, I buy everything I have, but I believe the only rational way to look at this is that if I break the encryption (or root a device or otherwise modify it), i should only lose the warranty/guarantee but otherwise should have the right to do it.

I have a 2gig quad core so I should have the horsepower to do it. The DVDFab program has clearly a 'Bluray To Mobile' option. I'm going to try a different bluray.

Use DVD Fab to rip just the movie file. Then use Handbreak to format and compress the movie. There is a thread already on here about what handbreak settings to use. If you follow the instructions in the first post you will be happy. It worked for me. Takes longer but its worth the wait.
