How to get 2.1 update for the driod eris

An easy way to remedy that is to just force the update onto the phone.

1) Download the update here. And do not open it.
2) Rename the zip file to "update" (update.zip if you have view file extensions on in Windows) and put it on your phone's SD card.
3) Turn off the phone.
4) Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons.
5) Select Recovery with the volume buttons.
6) If you get the exclamation mark device screen, press Volume up and power at the same time. It might also be the Home button and power instead if that doesn't work.
7) Then select update from SD card (I believe its the second option).
8) Then you should the phone saying copying files, and deleting files about 3000 times. If you see this, you did it correctly. Now just let the update run its course. It can take awhile.
9) When its done, it will bring you back to the menu. Then select Reboot phone. It will write the radio image and then reboot.

And that should be it.

Also consider doing a factory reset once you boot into 2.1 and making sure to back everything up first. Some people report problems if they don't do this, and it may save your wife from many headaches and frustration by her phone acting weird in the long run.

how do you back everything up? also is this 2.1 version something I can have done @ a verizon store/kiosk?

Technically yes. But you would lose any ability to root and have custom ROMs if you would choose to do so later on. And some reps may or may not do it.

And what I mean by backing everything up, is make sure all her contacts are on her Google account. You can also export them to the memory card by pressing Menu and then Import/Export in the People app.

And write down the names of all her apps. It makes it a lot easier to reinstall them later on.

says i have software version 1.17.605.1

time to upgrade?

ETA: when I do menu > settings > about phone > system updates

it says system is currently up to date. WHY?

Perhaps the OTA has not been pushed to your number; I believe that is the only time the "menu > settings > about phone > system updates " is functional. I don't know what the status is anymore with regard to Verizon pushing the OTA update. Manually updating may be the best option at this point.

I followed the instruction on #2 post, can I still root the phone? I forgot to root it before do the manual update. how do you know if your phone can be rooted or not when it is on 2.1? My sister was given a phone with 2.1 on it but I wasn't sure if it can be rooted or not. TIA.
The instructions I gave is the way to upgrade to stock 2.1, but still be able to root later on, since it doesn't touch HBOOT and keeps at 1.47.

If you want to check if your phone is rootable, turn the phone off. Then press and hold Volume down and Power. Look for the HBOOT version at the top.

If it says:

1.47: Your phone is stock, and is rootable.
1.49 S-OFF: Your phone is already rooted. No further action is needed.
1.49 S-ON: Your phone is stock, and is unrootable/very hard to root. An exploit has been found to get root, but it requires near perfect timing to achieve.

If you flashed that Verizon 2.1 RUU, I'm afraid you're out of luck for root.

Or check your HBOOT version by powering off the phone and powering back on by pressing the Send and the Power/End keys. If your HBOOT=1.49.0000 S-ON, you're only hope (as of now) is the developing root for leakers.

1.49.2000 This IS the ROOT bootloader (note minor version .2000)

I just asked and he did it w/his memory card. i guess i could of done the same thing w/my SanDisk micro card. Wonder how bad i screwed myself.

what's this silent call bug thing all about?
Its seems like some phones have it, or they don't. And sometimes they happen more frequently than others. My refurb for example, doesn't and never has in the past month I've had it. You'll know if you get it. You'll answer the phone, and you can't hear the other person, and they can't hear you. The temporary fix is to just restart the phone when it happens. Unfortunately, there is no permanent fix yet.

Hey all,

Not sure if there is a thread for this, but my wife has the Eris and declined the 2.1 update. She has not been prompted for the update since. I want to do the upgrade to her phone because it will fix some issues that she is having. I haven't gone to verizon yet but wanted to see if you guys know anything.

Thanks!

My advice

DON'T DO IT!!!

stay with 1.5, waaaaaaaaaaay more stable.
I have 2.1 and it SUCKS!!!!!
I'm going back to 1.5 if I can.

Just my 2 cents...:):)
