First wave DX production numbers and allocation rumors...

Wandered into a BB Mobile (that I didn't even know existed before today) in a crappy little local strip mall...

Two guys in it...one in a BB uniform busy accepting a delivery from UPS (no, not DXs), and another sitting at the counter.

"Do you work here?"

"Not really. I work for Verizon. Can I help you?"

Hmm.

So I play dumb, tell a sob story about waiting *forever* for my backordered Inc, and isn't there some new Moto phone about to come out?

"You mean this one?"

He hands me a live X.

"Uh...maybe. What is it?"

Anyway, turns out he's the regional VZW rep for my state, in the store to show off the candy. I continue to play (mostly) dumb and pick his brain for what he's heard about availability.

Off the record, he confirmed that VZW is "locked down" on the X until the 15th. He's seen corp memos saying no exceptions, no order conversions, nothing until 12:01am 7/15. More interesting, he was talking with the BB guy who was bitching about previous allocation problems he's had with high-demand phones...

Mr. VZW said the initial wave of DXs will be ~100k units, nationwide. VZW corp stores will get roughly 30k, BB 60k, and small independents the rest. That's right, a VZW rep told me today that BB will have double the allocation of native VZW. They are using the BB preorders to gauge interest regionally, and those numbers will certainly affect how many units a given BB store gets, and may also influence how the corp stores get theirs.

So I preordered another. Just #3 on this store's list as of 7/8, and I am in a tech hotbed! I figure I can use the gift cards at whichever store can hook me up first on the 15th. Think I'm probably #1 on the other store's list, as I preordered at lunch on 6/25 and had to prod them to read the BB corp email before they even knew about it!

I dropped by my Verizon store yesterday and the regional Motorola rep was in the store with a Droid X. Played with it for a few minutes, then got to asking about numbers. From what he said.... the store I was in was being shipped enough to last through at least a full day of sales, barring a crazy surge or something. He said that there should be plenty of phones in stores on day 1.

I have a reserve at the BB down the street, and i'm #10 or so. So... hopefully that comes through, but if not i'll just go down to my Verizon store and try there.

who? me or the rep? i assure you, i am telling it exactly as i heard it. was the rep telling the truth? who knows.

and if your 'car club buddy who works for vzw' is telling you the same story, doesn't that lend a bit of credibility?

shrug...

Guess I worded it wrong.. lol

I was saying I would call you a liar for telling that story but I cant because of what I heard yesterday. ;)

I'm going to be so upset if I can't get this phone...VZW won't move my NE2 credit back 5 extra days so i can use it on the 15th...If those 5 days sees all of the Droid X's sold out, I will be an unhappy customer...

Im sure in those 5 days they will have more stock in by how many were sold on the first few days. Don't worry you will get the phone they are said to have plenty no worries of screen shortages like with HTC

I bet if you get a rep to ring you up and then say you don't want it w/o the NE2 they will give it to you 5 days early. I have gotten it early by a couple weeks however I knew the rep I was buying from and do he didn't mind asking the manager for the exception. It definitely can happen it just needs the managers approval.

No matter what any Verizon rep says, manager or not...this phone will be hard to get if you don't make a plan for picking one up on day 1. When those Verizon Droid X commercials go live the "civilians" will rush to the stores and bombard the supply of Droid X's. C'mon, how can the average person not? HD Video, playback on your HDTV, NFL games on a 4.3 inch, Blockbuster? They're shooting for the stratosphere with this one and they're gonna try and get soccer moms, sports dads and wealthy teens in on it. Mark my words...this phone will be hot and Verizon's been waiting. They sure as hell didn't make a push like this for the Incredible.

Once again that was the AMOLED problem not necessarily Verizon's

I know what you are saying, but you know as well as I do that consumers at the point of sale could care less about who's fault is. All they care about is VZW is selling the phone and VZW doesn't have any more.

Its easy for me to say in hindsight of course and could go into semantics till the cows come home...well you know what I am mean.

Because most "average citizen" isnt all about the latest and greatest they are the people who keep the same phone for the 2 years they are locked down in contract for. Its only those that roam the internet and constantly want the next best thing that go out and buy it. I still think this phone will be much much easier to get then the incredible even if you dont go on launch day

I stopped by my local VZW corp store today while out running some errands and asked if they had a working demo unit yet and, if they are opening early and also how many they expect to get. Luckily I got the manager, anyway he said they don't have a working demo, only a dead one (it was a real phone, but it wouldn't turn on or anything). He showed it to me and it was very nice.

To the other questions, he said they are waiting to see how demand is the next few days to decide whether they will open early or not, but that in the past few days a lot of people have asked about it. And as to quantity, he said he doesn't know yet, but that there should be enough to "last the day".

I should probably also mention, there were two other people in there before me (I had to wait) that were both asking about the X. One of them was returning their original droid and wanted the X when it comes out.

It's no iphone but we'll see what the sales numbers look like when it all goes down. I know at least 9 people who have never owned a smart phone (like myself) who are jumping on the bandwagon because we're tired of waiting for Apple to come to Verizon. All of these friends/family are month to month because they never renewed their contracts waiting for the iphone. Droid X is the phone to make us take the plunge. Throw in some advertising from Verizon, commercials, some viral hype and after the first couple of days when early buyers start to show them off at work we'll see the tide shift. The original Droid brought android into the spotlight, Droid X will make it mainstream.
