Battery drains faster when in sleep mode

forgive me if this has been asked, i did a quick search and everything i found on google leading to this site was different from my situation.

my phones battery drains very quickly when i hit the end call button to put it to sleep. i actually get better battery life using the phone nonstop than i do when i put it to sleep, and by a significant amount.

for instance i spent a half hour texting and playing solitaire and used 1% battery according to the htc battery widget, then i put the phone to sleep for less than 5 minutes and lost another 1%. if i leave it sleeping for 20 minutes i can expect to lose 5% or more, the battery will only last about 5 hours with little use.

i even went as far as a hard reset (did not format the sd card) and the problem persists.

sometimes the battery monitor shows the camera using a lot of power, but not always, right now android system is using 96%.

putting it in airplane mode with gps, bt, and wifi off seems to stop it, right now i'm just trying to narrow things down more.

it's extremely aggravating that i just got this phone and sleep mode causes the battery to drain faster than heavy use!

other than the battery issue and some other minor things i miss about my bb i really really love the phone, but this is getting to be a deal breaker.

this is odd...never seen or heard anything like it reported personally. i can tell you that the camera using the battery is bunk (i'm pretty sure anyways). it may use a bit of battery, but pretty much everyone's battery usage shows the camera using a large percent if it's been turned on. i have seen apps not even show in battery usage, and it won't show all services, etc, that could be using battery. normally in situations like this, people recommend getting a program called Spare Parts from the market. i'm not really familiar with it, but it should show you apps that are using a lot of your phone's resources. other than that, you could try uninstalling apps, removing widgets from your homescreens, or if all else fails, hard reset the phone.

there is a thread, i think it's stickied, about battery life and task killers. it would apply to your situation even though people aren't reporting the same issue with battery drain while the phone is asleep. it's the same concept however.

didn't see this, but i still think that the thread on battery life and task killers would apply. there's no reason i can think of that you'd drain more power with your screen off. it almost sounds like something is set to run with the screen off in a program. i'm not familiar wiht android programming really, but i would imagine it's possible to have something set that way. if you hard reset it though, and the problem is still occurring, and you haven't installed any apps, sprint would definitely replace it i'm sure.

sadly i'm on vacation and no sprint stores within 50-100 miles it seems.

it appears that sometimes the phone even drains the battery rapidly while on now too, not near as badly as when it's in sleep mode (meaning it happens in sleep more frequently)

a combination of setting to airplane mode and back while setting the phone to sleep and also turning on and off the data connection as well as app killing seems to help, but it's a hairy process and way more complicated than it should be.

i'll have to contact sprint or head to their store when i get back in town.

i might also add that sprint coverage here isn't very widely spread, mostly near the interstate and luckily i've remained fairly close to the interstate the whole time. only seen a roaming icon or warning once so far. so maybe the phone is having signal issues, though i seem to get plenty of bars.

usually says i have a high "no service" percentage in the battery options. even though service seems fairly good! the ev is often grey on the phone as well, but turning off data altogether didn't seem to help either so :/

thanks for the replies, i suppose discussion on this matter couldn't hurt?

seems to be doing better now, maybe i'm just using the phone less? the 25% battery loss in under and hour still throws me though, i don't even understand how that could be possible.

last 2-3 days i've gotten a good 15 hours or better out of a charge. considering an upgrade to a 1750-1800 mah battery just to get a bit more life out of this thing.

i hope someday soon we have smart phones that aren't power hogs.

i've actually been using the phone pretty normally now, leaving data on all day and occasionally enabling gps for local weather and the like.

seems to be doing much better.

still going to be hard getting used to absolutely having to charge nightly, then again compared to my bb this phone is amazing in the functionality department.

i'm gonna give it another week and if things continue to improve i'll just assume it was growing pains??

on another note, is there a reason these forums aren't sending me email notifications for new replies? i have everything set correctly in my CP.

You've gotten 15 hours from a battery? Woah, then mine must really be bad.

I've had similar problems to the topic creator since I got the phone which was like 3 weeks ago.
I can barely last 12 hours without having to charge my phone. And this is if my phone is in sleep mode for the majority of the time.

Would I really need a replacement?

Being in an area with very poor Sprint signal coverage can really zap your battery, but, your battery life seems more poor than it should be even in this situation.

I'd demand a replacement phone at a Sprint store when you return home.

Good Luck.

Will they just give you the replacement phone right then and there?

I'd like to get one but I can't afford to not have my phone with me for a day.
