Try the following app. Its really cool and you can customise your design for keys/colours etc. Pretty simple to do... I managed it!!! It gives you the standard qwerty/compact qwerty/numeric keypad.
Just installed this today and so far it looks good even though it's a few letters short to be perfect for norwegian. Best thing is that it's numeric keyboard when the phone is vertical but switches to qwerty when horizontal. This was one of the things I thought was strange missing with the original keyboard.
You can run a program from the PC that install the app directly into the phone. Or you copy the apk til the downloads folder and DL an app that installs it.
I install directly on the phone since I'm having problems installing via USB.

I created a folder call HTC Keyboard on the sd card using the PC Companion and copy/pasted it to there. I used Linda file manager to open it on the phone and then installed from there.
You then need to go to your 'Settings', 'Locale and Text' and select the HTC_IME mod.
There are several but I haven't had much luck with them since I get a message saying there's no device connected and I must install USB-driver. Search for "apk installer" on google.
Its just a small aside, in the settings you can set it to flick/cycle between numeric and qwerty keypads. You have to select the gesture you want, ie 'swipe right' then select which of the keyboards you want available (I don't use the compact qwerty so deselected that) then you just flick between them in portrait view. Its a bit glitchy but kinda cool!
