Google Search on Backflip (get rid of yahoo)

I am making this post cause I am pretty sure there are about to be TONS of forum postings of people asking how to do this. Think we could list ideas and ways here for people to find. I do not know how to do it, and I'm sure someone will call AT&T and they'll say like, DEAL WITH IT. I hope thats not the case. Hopefully someone out there will come out and say, hey here is the way and posts it here.

You can set google as your homepage in the browser or you can bookmark google in the browser and then add a shortcut to your home screen to the bookmark.

To change the home page while in the browser:

tap the menu key (the one that looks like four squares at left bottom)
tap plus (more)
scroll to the bottom and tap settings
scroll down and tap Set home page
enter the URL you want to use and press OK

I actually use the old school media net homepage (h**p://device/home/) as my home page and set it up with shortcuts to my local sports teams, etc.

I have a shortcut to google on one of the homescreens if I want to search google.

Personally I don't get the choice of Yahoo. ATT does want Android to succeed on their network right? I mean, is there a "Oh, we tried it and it didn't work out for us' conspiracy with Apple. I love the Backflip (former iPhone user) but Yahoo is a curious choice. In term of searching, my preference is not to use widgets anyway. I'll search in browser with Google as my homepage.

since we can install apps via adb, does that mean we can extract the google search from the sdk and install it?

I have been trying, I have torn apart 3 different cupcake and dount builds that I have used on my kaiser and no luck yet. Unfortunatuly I don't know how to pull apart the sdk, or I'm sure I would have the fix. If I find it, I'll post. Or if someone knows what apk file is used, let me know and I'll find it.

From what I have found the 2 apk files needed are VoiceSearch.apk and/or VoiceSearchWith Keyboard.apk but they will not install via ADB. I'm working on it and hopefully we can get this also working. As for making it search by google, becasue GoogleSearch.apk is there, we just need to find where the settings is and change it; working on the too

could the yahoo.apk be modding the googlesearch.apk? because if im not mistake the widgets look the same, and the widget menu isnt saying yahoo search it just says search.

AT&T may have just used their apk to change the default search widget from google to yahoo and not just put yahoo search on there. In that case our aim would be to remove yahoosearch.apk(or whatever the name is) eh?

Thats a good idea? maybe just throw out the hole thing and add the apk from another droid? say the clinq?just compare the two codes

viewing the phone through droid explorer or the adb i can not see the yahoo search. but i did yank the google search apk and odex. dunno if anyone can do anything with em though...

I may be able to, I'll test it tonight and see if I don't break it in the process. I also have one more method for VoiceSearch.apk that I am going to try.

I went a different route with this, and decided to just write my own google search widget. I was reading the android developer docs and I came across this:
Paste directly from the dev site
A RemoteViews object (and, consequently, an App Widget) can support the following layout classes:

And the following widget classes:

Descendants of these classes are not supported.

I didn't really think about it when I saw it, but if you check out the open search app on the market, it says that a search widget isn't possible, so I guess descendants means derived classes. I'm really pissed, not being able to switch between 2g and 3g is bad enough, but they have taken away my Google too! This is my first android phone, and I like it enough to know I'm not going back to iPhone, but I think this thing might find its way to eBay.

If you use an app for processes, you will see a YahooSearch service, as I recall. There's like 1-2 IM services, and the Yahoo one, that have a keep-alive of some sort. If you kill it, it's back within like 1-2 minutes.

I WAS able to install the VoiceSearch.apk just fine via adb... long-press on the search key on the keyboard brings that up. I dunno if there's an equivalent on the touchscreen, though.

i have had a backflip for a month now....
i used a moto droid the other day with the google search widget for the first time last week... and the voice search stuff and now i want the widget.

Dolphin browser
i have found a browser replacement .. and after much playing and testing web pages between the default and the dolphin... the dolphin is like learning to use a completely new browser. but after a week of steady use i like it more the the default. the tab function is well designed. and you can make the tabs disappear and come back by tapping the screen.
i also like all the new tab links and bookmarks
dolphin browser bookmarkSD add-on
it allows you to sync you google bookmarks to your phone.
and that is what honestly is made me use it more because i wanted my bookmarks.

and the search widget is so yahoo search widget is so crappy i deleted it the first day... i used it 3 times and the yahoo mobile page is so junked up i couldnt stand reading it...

You can install the google voice search app on your Backflip. Then put a shortcut to it on your homescreen. Once you install it some other apps (such as replacement keyboards, Handcent) will use it for text entry. You can get to voice text input from the default Android virtual keyboard by tapping the menu key and selecting "Speak" in Handcent.
