Just curious what kind of results everyone else is getting using the Speed Test app. The fastest download speed I was able to get was slightly over 2mbps and am upload speed of around 700kbps. It seems top be a lot faster early on the morning. So, how fast is your connection?

What does you signal look like, how many bars. As already mentioned 2mbps down is about the best you'll see with full service, comparable to a decent dsl which top out around 3.5mbps down, but can fluctuate down to as low as dial up speed based up a) signal strength b) network load c) the quality of the infrastructure in your geographical location. The upload speeds are arbitrary unless you are, well, uploading :p. The main purpose of the upstream for browsing/downloading is to send acknowledgement packets of only a couple bits to the server to tell the server i got the last data packet gimme another. For example when i used to have cable net rated for 20mbps i could download at full speed without any speed loss (used to get around 2.4MBps max) uploading at only around 10kbps. For all intensive purposes your 56kbps up is more than enough to handle anything you would be downloading on the cell network.

I currently have 3 out of 6 bars on the strength meter...

I just ran another test and after it spiked to about 800kbit ir started dropping and I cancelled the test at 500. The phone works fine though and everytime I'm browsing in thehouse I'm usually on wifi so it doesn't matter much. I live in a relatively small town so it is what it is and I guess I'm lucky to even have 3g. It will be interesting to see how many years it takes them to activate the 4g in my area...

That's about the maximum REAL WORLD performance that you'll get from EVDO Rev.A with a good strong signal.

If you get 2+ mbps down... you're doing VERY well.

I've only gone over 2mbps once so I figured Sprint's 3g service probably topped off somewhere around there. I have been in the 1.6-1.8 mbps range many times though. Of course those readings were when I had all 6 bars.

If you want a more accurate comparison of signal strength go into: menu > settings > about phone > status

Signal strength is reported in -dBm. This will be a lot more useful than counting the number of bars on the phone.

You'll usually see signal in the following ranges:
Higher than -70 = Really strong
-80 to -70 = Strong Signal
-80 to -90 = Decent signal
-90 to -100 = Marginal
Lower than -100 = Hope you have WiFi.

Interesting. Didn't know that.

Just out of curiosity I checked the signal strength on my phone while sitting still on my couch. The signal strength fluctuated from -91 to -65. I know you guys said the bars don't really mean anything but the signal strenth and number of bars stayed consistent. 3 bars= -91, 4 bars= -86, 5 bars= -76, 6 bars= -65. Maybe I just misunderstood what you meant.

at 3:30 i just tested mine and got 941 down and 494 up signal strength was at
-96dBm. that seems kinda sad to me concidering we have a sprint repeater in the building. also all the bars for my signal were full.

As i said before signal only, while the lead role in the act, isn't the only one on stage. at 3:30 pm on a friday don't you think everyone and their brother is on their phone? When more people jump in the pool you area to swim gets smaller, and probably warmer too . Also your signal if you look a couple posts up is on the lower side of not so good......

That was my point. My signal was on the almost crap part of the list yet we have a sprint repeater in the building.

The "bars" mean nothing for EVDO. Whether they're a useful representation of anything is another argument entirely.

That's impossible... There isn't anything made that is wireless that doesn't work better when there's a stronger signal. I don't know about your area, but in mine the evdo is received by the same towers as the cellular traffic and it rides the same fiber back to the co. I can't think of any way that when the signal to the nearest tower is weak that the evdo isn't affected. As a matter of fact, when I get down to 1 bar and start dipping below that, I go to 1x data too.
