Navionics Mobile Out! Nautical Charts

Nothing else is around. It's the only nautical chart app that does NOT require an active INTERNET connection.
Works well, but I noticed one bug: When you close the app, the gps icon remains on (at least with the Droid Incredible) so you must use a task killer to close Navionics Mobile (app name: USAEast for me). Why for the love of god can't all apps have a simple EXIT button. I just don't get it. Anyway, as a licensed captain I was waiting for Navionics Mobile to come out for Android. You still can't import routes or waypoints, but you can create them on the device and export them to Google Earth.

Geowake is the only other app available and it's very slow (even on wifi). Will not work offline.

Note: It takes 15 minutes to download and decompress the charts on your Incredible, so a WiFi connection in recommended. I have my phone set to not sleep when plugged in. I don't know what would happen if it went to sleep while downloading the charts.

West coast is available. Search for: Marine: US West
It comes up fine for me with a "Buy" Button. I didn't buy it because I have the East version.

Alternative: Download Barcode Scanner and scan this: Marine: US West for Android

If still not available, this could be why - email from Navionics:

Thanks for your email and interest in our apps.
Navionics Mobile apps are already available for Android. We are uploading them to the market in these days. Check the market and if your app isn’t there yet, wait a couple more days, you will find it by the end of next week.

Let us know how you enjoy it.

It's good. Haven't used it on the water yet. It's nice that the charts are preloaded with no internet connection required. No multitouch (pinch and zoom). You can double tap or use the zoom buttons. Good clarity - standard Navionics Charts. Ports and Services Listing as well. You can create Routes and save them. To find find them click on the search button (this is where the ports and services are located as well). To rename a route, you must click on the route on the chart (can't rename it from the route list). It needs tweaking and there is the bug about closing the app but gps remains active (you will need to kill the app or you will drain your battery). You can use any task killer or Menu, Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, FORCE STOP. The app will be listed as USAEast or USAWest, etc.

Overall a very good app. esp since it's the only one available. Navionics is a descent company and I'm sure they will improve it as well. The chart data is excellent.

The only bummer is that you can not import routes. You can export routes via email or to google earth (with the Navionics plugin).

The app is just a 2nd backup for me and when I want to check a chart when I'm not on the boat or at home. Or perhaps when I'm on vacation and a rent a boat without a chartplotter, etc. It's nice to have a chart at your fingertips.

I'll let you know how well it works on the water tracking the boat's position and course on the chart.

Try rebooting your phone. Try zooming in and out. Move the chart to another location. If all that doesn't work, Uninstall and then reinstall the app. Mine is working fine with Droid Incredible.

Note: It takes 15 minutes to download and decompress the charts on your Incredible, so you must use a WiFi connection. I have my phone set to not sleep when plugged in. I don't know what would happen if it went to sleep while decompressing the charts.

I had/have Active Captain on my Omnia, how would you compare this to that? I know Active Captain are making a android app, but it won't be ready for a while, Was wondering if your application would get me by till then or if you consider your app a better one anyways. I'm thinking of downloading it and testing it, and if I don;t like it just uninstalling it with the the 24 hour limit.

One problem is I don't have a Wifi connection out here in the middle of the Puget Sound... lol so is there no way this can do it over the 3g connection?

I don't recommend downloading it over a 3G connection. It will take a very long time - like hours. The app is only 4MB, but then it has to download the charts. The charts are about 300MB uncompressed, so about 150-200MB compressed. That's a long long download at 3G Speeds. I would estimate about at least 1 hour and depending on your signal strength, could be a lot longer. If you want to give it a try, set your phone not to sleep when plugged in and then plug it in. Download the App and run it. The app itself will download the charts automatically.

Note - How to set your phone to not sleep when charging (plugged in):
Menu, Settings, Applications > Development. Select the "Stay awake" check box

Thats not a problem, i've download 500+ plus websites via my 3g connection, but is it possible? as you said "you must use a WiFi connection"...

Sorry, I should have said that you can use a 3G connection, but it's not recommended. BYW, I'm just a user, not the developer.

Oh my bad, i thought it was your app lol, because of the post with the contact details up above....

Well thanks for your help :)

btw

Have you used it out on the water yet? if not, how about a video :) would love to see it in action, and all their videos are standstill

has anyone had this problem. I downloaded the app on wi fi and it also de compressed the charts. Now when I open the app, It opens fine but I just see basic land out lines and no detail on the charts. Like a basemap without the chart overlay.

Any suggestions?

Android can't see navionics charts

Well, still no reply so I will join in. I downloaded the Pacific Islands/Japan and after going through a half hour of 2 downloads and installation, I could only see the outlines of land masses. My brand new Android is not reading the navionics charts. I get a red arrow for my position, but nothing else. I uninstalled to get my money back and I'm waiting for some sort of reply before I spend the money again and get nothing. Hope to hear from someone soon.

Same issue for me (Samsung I9000, android 2.1). Did you fix it?
I sent a message to Navionics support, no answer until now.

Damn too bad I dont wanna pay for apps, this would be cool.

I've not checked out this app yet but please don't be that way about paying for apps. I want to encourage you to help support the android developers. I'm not saying pay for an app only for the sake of saying "I'm a supporter" but if you find and app to be worthwhile, a couple of bucks is not much to pay after all.
