Root How Many Times Have You 'Had To' Recover or Re-Flash?

..and what happened to cause you to have to do that?

- just once

- twice now

- three times or more

This is not polling for re-flashing a ROM or flashing a new ROM for fun or out of curiosity; I'd like to see a poll of rooters who messed up something and needed to either re-flash their zip file and start over or had to find and go to another ROM because the current one just was not working.

Let's all be honest; we're in this together.

I had to re-flash a zip once because of overclocking too high and having the "on boot" box checked.

I had to flash a different ROM once because the ROM I was trying to use just would not function on my device; weird, fatal behaviors every time I came out of the lock screen and tried to configure the thing, so I hung it up and moved on to a different ROM.

I can't remember a time when I had to reflash. I never took my cpu past 710, and from wiping and flashing roms sometimes up to 10 times a day, wipe data/dalvik is forever etched into my brain.

I've been lucky (and very careful, I must say) to have not put myself in a position to have needed to re-flash to recover. I won't be in a position to start monkeying-around with my this-is-my-primary-phone Eris until the 15th of July, if you know what I mean [then, let the fun and custom ROMs begin!]

I'm going to go with none so far. Even tho I did reflash to get the APN's to fix MMS in Aloysius. All my flashing so far is mainly trying out different roms.

I've gotten 'restore nandroid via adb' for my good backups after flashing a new rom that just didn't want to work for me at all.

that happens when the /system folder gets formatted but the flash hangs up before the /system folder from the rom can be copied to it.

Interesting and funny that you would mention Mr. Eastwood. I got mistaken for him as I was getting ready to leave the Fog Cutter restaurant in L.A. years ago. The family would not let me "get away with trying to fool" them.. so, heck, I went ahead and signed two napkins for them.

I don't think I look much like that guy at all, but at that time smoking was allowed inside eating establishments and I was enjoying a cheroot and had just put my hat on and stood up..

..oh well, the people I was with thought it should be a compliment, but I felt like I was in a crazy house for a few minutes there.

Whenever I'm about to make a change to system files (like when I put in the semi-transparent lock screen), I always do a Nandroid backup first. Sure enough, I always mess something up while I'm tinkering, but then I just restore the backup and try again.

Why would that happen? The phone had like 95% battery

it doesnt have anything to do with battery. its caused by a bad flash. something makes it hang up and abort before the /system folder is copied over.

"..a bad flash.." I'm wondering if we need to be more careful about md5 checksums for the zip files, of if you're referring to something else by that.

no, it just means something caused it to hang up. it will usually spit out an error , "failure at line xxx"

not a big deal, your phone wont get past the boot splash till you get something else flashed, but no harm done.

I have had that happen with a couple of ROMs.

I was not sure what was up, being a rooting n00b, so I re-downloaded the zip file just to be safe, and re-flashed with good results. Now I'm thinking I may not have needed to re-download and merely needed to run the flash again.

The first time I flashed Senseable it just got stuck looping on the flash screen... I just reflashed the same ROM and have had no issues since... Sometimes it just locks up in mid-Flash, I guess...
