Root root: best practices

Okay, so I've seen lots of threads and lots of posts where our rooted brethren (and sisters ) have some great pearls of wisdom regarding best practices once you are rooted. So, I thought I'd post a few that I've collected and have everyone throw darts at them and maybe add a few of their own. Here's what I got:

- always make a Nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM

- always check a file's MD5 sum after downloading AND after placing on your /sdcard (you can also use/check SHA1 hashes, but these are less widely published)

- always do the requisite wipes in custom recovery before flashing a new ROM--unless the developer indicates that you don't have to (check the dev's ROM thread for instructions)

- when overclocking, be sure to set a failsafe (temperature) profile

- when overclocking, don't check "set-on-boot" until you are sure your phone is stable for a reasonable duration (at least 15 minutes...your mileage may vary )

- backup your apps to your /sdcard and backup your /sdcard to your computer

I think all I could add to that is: before jumping into anything, spend some time doing research first.

It's a lesson I've learned... oh, who am I kidding? I'm still learning that lesson!

lol! yeah, we've all been there too!

You make a Nandroid backup via Amon_RA's custom recovery that you installed. It makes a complete backup of your phone. Nice for restoring if things get messed-up or you want to switch from one ROM to another (that you've backed-up with a previous Nandroid backup).

The overclocking note of "reasonable duration" could be elaborated on a little bit, as I've seen posts reporting problems cropping up weeks after setting the maximum over 710.

I was hoping somebody with a lot of root experience in the Eris would recommend never setting it over that. But the "ymmv" thing seems to be a sort of catchall for many differences we see reported in this device, overclocking included.

Sometimes the thing will freeze up right at the point of moving the slider to a certain value, say 768. Other times, in a different ROM, over 800 seems to work ok... for a while at least, and some report remaining there indefinitely with no anomalies.. so far.


[edit 26 July] - I've settled on 710/710 with a sleep profile at 245/245

That poor little CPU.

I'm reminded of a frog.

Many, many years ago when first year college biology included dissecting frogs, we had to dispatch the live creature by quickly inserting a sterile pin into the back of its head and swish it around in the skull, destroying the brain ("painlessly," the prof told the disgusted class).

One day things did not go so well; the frog at the table of the student to my immediate right began hopping and spinning wildly, ending up on the floor and causing quite the ruckus in the classroom.

Eventually it was captured and the student was asked what happened. "As soon as the pin went in the frog took off," she screeched. She was still holding it as it was writhing trying to get away, so the professor went to that table and finished the job.

The Eris is the frog. The CPU is the frog's brain. The pin is overclocking.

i did research it and debated rooting, initially i was going to do it for all the wrong reasons. after speaking with scary alien and lots of reading i decided that my thurst for more battery life was going to lead me to do it and so i did.

haveing done it, i turned to scary once again, and he (as he is doing now for everyone else, and i suspect has done several times) pointed me to this very informative posting to help those of us that need it.

im thinking he needs a donate button. he has to have a way to feed his mountain dew craving. (after all , we dont want him to leave, even if it is just to get a new sixpack)

scared the bajezus out of me when i did it, phone took like 10 mins to boot back up after i was done (final boot) but am i happy i did it? let me put it this way...

i would walk up to an ios fanboy and kick him square in the crunchies....
