Root Dark Sense Installation Failed

Hi folks,

I have a Galaxy I7500l from Bell in Canada. My first Android phone. My wife came home with two that came for renewing our contract. I did some reading and was disappointed that no updates were coming and promptly flashed Galaxo to the phone without truly understanding the steps i was taking just following directions. Galaxo V1.6.3.3 (Donut) (Page 1) - Release - Drakaz's Android stuff

I like this version (1.6.3.3) much more than the stock 1.5. I installed some apps Beautiful Widgets,Astrid etc. I then installed the Helix theme by placing the zip on the internal SD booting to recovery, permissions, apply any zip and reboot. I want to try the Dark Sense theme so i dl both 1.6 and 2.0 standard from here Index of ./darksense/DarkSense2.0/ and here http://www.androidcodex.com/files/index.php?dir=darksense/DarkSense1.6/ .I am using the same method to try and install the themes as I did with the Helix theme but I get the message Installation failed immediately after attempting to apply them. This is the first real problem I've encountered but since I'm so raw at this stuff i literally haven't a clue how to address this issue or any other for that matter.
Do i have to remove the Helix theme first? How do i do this? Will it automatically return to the default theme?
I did a nandroid backup before i applied galaxo in the first place and i think i did one before applying the Helix theme in the first place. Is more than 1 nandroid backup available to restore(i assume they are complete system images?) when you choose the option to restore most recent backup or are they overwritten? The reason i ask is that while i was in recovery mode after the attempted installation of the Dark Sense theme i accidentally started a nandroid backup (large fingers) and didnt know how (was afraid) to stop it. Have i erased the original backups? Can (should) these backups be stored on the external SD as well?I have no intention of ever returning to 1.5 but i might like to try GAOSP and would feel more comfortable attempting it if I understood the backup restore process more.
The Dark Sense themes with ADW looks very nice. All help getting it to work is greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Mongoid

Welcome to the forums!

I can't really help you with Darksense, inFECT probably knows his stuff better than I do. But for the backups, they are not overwritten, so you can always go back to whichever you want. If you plug your phone via USB, scroll down the notification area, click the usb notification and select mount, you will see your phone as another drive on your computer, just like a USB key. On it, you will see a folder called Nandroid backup (something like that) and in it you will see all of your backups (if I remember correctly, their name is the date). You can then move some on your computer (or delete some!).

In the recovery, you only have the option to restore the latest backup, so you have to manage your nandroid backups accordingly.

Hope that helped. ;)

Thanks DaSchmarotzer

I used your excellent easy guide to flash Galaxo to this phone!
I think maybe i better do some more reading before hittin the forums and wasting your time. I was so excited about being able to squeeze more out of the phone and being able to have control over its content that I plunged right in to your guide within 20 minutes of taking it out of the box and then realized I have no idea what i just did!
Thanks for the answer on the backups. I am relieved to know that multiple backups are kept. So since it only restores the most recent it should be a matter of moving or renaming to ensure the backup i want will be restored?
I guess I should try and restore to before i applied the Helix theme and then try the DarkSense theme ?
Man I really need to get a grip on file structure and what is affected by what.Whats overwritten, what isn't (shouldn't) etc. Should i get familiar with Odin?

Thanks again for the prompt reply

Don't worry about wasting our time, we're here for that. ;)

I don't think you really need to use Odin, unless one day you want to go back to an official Samsung Firmware (using Galaxo and rooting the phone voids the warranty, but you can flash the original firmware back and no one will ever know you installed a custom recovery and rooted your phone).

As for the Nandroid backups, yes, you should move them or rename them (I add a parenthesis after the name with details in it, so if I want to use them later I simply remove the parenthesis and the name is the original. If you rename them completely, I'm not sure they will work afterwards. I suggest to play it safe.)

Yes, you should restore your phone to before you applied Helix. You'll lose your new contacts, applications, etc. but not your pictures, videos, music, etc. Sync your contacts with Google, it's a pain to add them twice. :D

I hope that made sense, I'm still a little dizzy from my workout.

It makes perfect sense :)

I will try to figure out which file i need to restore and make a practice of managing them after every significant change.
If i were to accidentally restore the backup i did before applying the 1.6.3.3 Galax0 instead of the one i did before applying the Helix theme would it be a simple matter of booting to recovery and re-applying the update.zip following the instructions in your guide? Or would it be an even simpler matter of booting to recovery, renaming and applying the other nandroid backup?

Thanks for your gracious feedback.

You should be able to go back simply by using another backup. For example, I did a nandroid backup (I was using Galaxo), then I installed GAOSP (Android 2.1 ROM, it's still a beta though) and I went back to Galaxo simply by restoring my latest Nandroid backup, without applying the update, restoring the Google apps, etc.

Well my nandroid restore doesnt seem to do anything. Whichever restore file i leave in the folder (there were 3) the restore says completed successfully in a second or 2. These are 100+ MB files, I'm pretty sure a restore should take a little longer than that no?
I'm still left with my phone unchanged and the helix theme installed after rebooting. I guess the next step is to redo the galax0 update.zip. Do i just boot into recovery ,wipe data/factory reset, apply sd update.zip and reboot.
Should i be concerned about this process since the restore is not working?.

Thanks again,

Well, it's weird, that's for sure, but I wouldn't worry about it.

What you said to resinstall Galaxo was correct, but you forgot to restore the google apps before rebooting. It's pretty long to do a nandroid restore (there will be many many dots appearing on the screen).

Just to be sure....the home key is that weird little oval key right....not the OK button? Please tell me its the weird little oval key :)

Good Lord! I think i was hitting the OK key ....how embarrassing. I went back in and purposely hit the OK key instead of home and the exact symptoms repeated. I will try again....

OK now that I have shaken off the brain fade all worked well. I have Galax0 going again and I am going to try out the DarkSense theme. The backups are working as well now as I was able to return to the Helix theme and go back to empty Galax0

Thanks again for your prompt excellent advice.
