Samsung claims to us that the camera they are using for the Captivate, Galaxy S, and Vibrant models have a night brightness indicator thingy that is just as good as flash or better. But if thats the case then why does the Fascinate and EPIC 4g models have LED flash?......I'm not buying the lies!

So I personally am definitely going to have to see some night-time snapshots before i buy, so i can see these supposedly hidden light producing features on the camera.

Also still mad about the missing ffc. Like, seriously wtf.

Yeah, how often will you be using it anyway? European phones have had FFC's for about 5 yrs now and nobody ever complained about it here. I remember getting a Nokia 6600 and N73 which both had them and I had no clue what to do with it. I still dont think Id want to be looking at my phone while talking.

How many people stand still while on their phone? Nobody I know of. Everyone is either walking, driving, working or doing something that will relegate video chat useless.

That doesn't necessarily make too much sense seeing how the normal Galaxy S is a gsm device, has a ffc, and with that being said not subject to a 4g/wimax. hmm?

the ffc isn't the real issue here actually, and its not why i started the thread. But it just bothers me how we have a galaxy s here and it doesn't have a physical feature that the original has. So i found it fitting to bitch about it in addition to no flash.

FFC, I think that AT&T left it off for the following reasons:

Bandwidth, you can only use the I4 on Wi-Fi.

I don't think the I4 and Androids FFC play well together(if at all) and customers would want to know if you sell both the phones, why can't they have video calls between them. (A potential headache that AT&T doesn't make money off of because it only works using WI-Fi).

LED Flash is really a weak bandaid for dark situations (flash won't help past 3-5 feet and then it looks washed out). I wished it had the LED flash because it makes a good flashlight with the proper app.

you do realize the GSM networks overseas are much faster than our own right. I'm well aware of it being possible over 3G, but you need a consistent speed of HSPA 7.2 to get an acceptable picture and quality frame rate. please choose your battles wisely, because I didn't say it was because of 3G or 4G, I SAID BANDWIDTH, and at the moment you are lucky to get 1.5mbps on AT&T and that is in a large metropolitan area like Boston.

Have you see what Facetime looks like over a portable wifi hotspot through Verizon??? 5fps max. No thanks!


EDIT: Also the original Galaxy S doesn't have an optical trackpad, that is just a large home button.

The LED as a camera flash in my opinion is overrated. I've had flashes on my Xperia X1 and Moto Q9...not that good of a job in making the image quality better. However, they are really useful to use a flashlight in when u need one and don't have access to a flash light. Of course the other option is to use the light from the screen.

I also had a FFC on my Xperia X1 when I got it in Nov 2008. I used it exactly 0 times...lol.

Furthermore, AT&T's network can barely support a quality (low latency, no audio dropouts) Skype call over 3G, video calls (no matter who is providing the service, Skype Fring, etc) would be absolutely terrible.

I will not miss the ffc one bit...

Yea and video calling over 3G sucks with Fring and it's also terrible on the Evo with Qik. Just not worth it IMO unless it's optimized or on WiFi.

Downside is that VZW version has Bing search and it's on the nations slowest 3G network.

Maybe the CDMA versions have a flash because they are thicker?? or designed slightly later since the hardware is slightly different?? (just a guess)

Your argument now makes more sense, but even with that being said I personally do not feel that a hardware feature such as the ffc should have been removed for that reason alone. BANDWIDTH or not dude...Besides, the gsm networks overseas are not that much noticeably faster in this case either for live video playback anyway. People overseas who uses it; also use it over wifi primarily. From what I hear...

Anyway Its still the principal of it all. You guys are defending the device as is, and i understand that absolutely. But honestly, what harm would it have done the manufacturer and the carriers to just streamline the experience and have the same hardware functionality across the board. I would not have made this thread if ALL of the US carrier models had the EXACT same hardware specifications (be it either all no flash/ffc, or all with flash/ffc).

And idk if I said this here before or not, but yes I'm one of those idiots who taking pictures in the dark outside. So i would like it if my next 500/600 phone had a flash for my convenience. Since my old one did....

I think bottom line is cost/margin for the US carriers. If having no ffc and flash means costing $200-150 less for full retail price, then I welcome that.

The pictures in a room with lights on ect.. (without flash) are amazing!!!!

If you use the flash and are more then 3 or 4 feet away the picture comes out very bad. If you use a flash out side to lets say take a picture of a car, it would come out like crap, but lets say you were to move close to the car and only take a picture of the emblem on the car it would come out very nice.
