The best SMS app IMO is SMS PopUp ...

Lots of setting options on how it performs ...

Just make sure you disable the Notifications setting in System setting for messages or you will get double notifications

I have switched from the default Messaging app to using Handcent SMS which is quite configurable and probably does what you wish. The feature I use the most is the ability to dictate my SMS messages. Yep, I click in the text box and then speak my text message.

When i receive new messages, it beeps, flashes, vibrates and auto pops the message on the now illuminated screen. I bet you can configure it to do exactly what you're looking for.

I have hadcent sms, but I don't want an sms pop up to show up I just want the screen to be lit up and that's it.

Did you even look at it? I'm guessing NOT!

You can uncheck "show a popup". Then again, I've never tried this so I don't know if it would give you a blank lock screen light up if you got an sms.

This is starting to become an annoying thread. MXRider, Handcent SMS allows for the very detailed setting for: Notification Pop-Up, Notification Tone, Notification Vibrate and LED notification including the color you want it to be.

If Handcent SMS, something I am not affiliated with whatsoever, does not meet the notification needs you are looking for, I sincerely doubt that the Motorola Droid will ever meet those needs.

i have handcent installed but it does NOT light up the screen unless you have pop up enabled and its pretty pointless IMO because whats the point of having a pop up when your already in the messages...
