Hi Pros...

Been around 2 weeks since it got delivered, but I don't know so many terms used here. First of all, I'm definitely customizing my phone but I need to get all those facts straight.

Currently, I don't even know what state my phone is in. ;)
It's Nexus One of course, shipped overseas to Singapore (the hell i'm in).
So I'm second-guessing that mine is an unlocked version, and running Froyo FRF91. I also know adb refers to something like a terminal using command lines.

So what rooting does? Is it to format my OS (which I think is referring to Froyo), and then install a custom one onto it (which I think is ROM).

Enlighten me fellas. :D

Ok. First of all, hi and welcome to the forums.

So when you start your phone up does it show the unlocked padlock symbol? If it does then you are infact bootloader unlocked.

Secondly to check your build of froyo, go to settings> about phone and scroll to the bottom. It will be listed as Build Number.

Third, adb refers to Android Debug Bridge. Its used to control the OS directly from your terminal.

Lastly, rooting gives you "administrator" access to the OS. It allows you to do and change things that you normally wouldn't be able to. Rooting will allow you to flash (install ) a custom recovery which in turn will allow you to install a custom OS or mods.

I hate typing on my phone so I'll send some links your way in a few hours after work.

Great info. Thanks Espike...

I guess my phone is not unlocked since I don't see any padlock icon anywhere during bootup. Anyway, I thought it's suppose to be an unlocked version if it's shipped to me (as in paid full among etc).

So... Any other terms that I need to know? ;)
*Eagerly awaiting the links.

The Nexus one is SIM unlocked by default and I think thats what you were referring too. Here, unlocked is used to mean bootloader unlocked.

Other terms... lets see...

Recovery is a piece of software that lets you flash ROMs and other mods to your phone. The stock one on the N1 won't let you do much except update stock android. A custom recovery such as this one [Recovery] [30-May-2010] RA-nexus-v1.7.0.1 will allow you to flash all types of cool things to your phone like ROMs, apps, etc. as well as create a Nandroid backup.

A Nandroid is a snapshot of your phone's current state. Its good practice to do a nandroid before you wipe and install a new ROM so that if anything should go wrong, you could just revert back to the way your phone was.
