Reasons the Droid X is a great tool for a College Student

Ok so, I'm a sophomore in college and am due for my upgrade. I really like the Droids but am looking forward to trying the Droid X. However, my parents are not 100% sure they want to get me a smartphone. They believe it will be an added distraction during the school year but I think otherwise. Figured this would be the place to go to get advice on how to handle this situation and get good arguments for my parents!

Cheaper than a laptop

Lots of things to help you through college, from coupon for saving money, to google docs for keeping your papers organized, to being able to stay in touch with your teachers/classmates through email.

Also being able to upload pictures through picasa and them being able to share your college experience (the.. PG parts...). Actually, that's not a good one, scratch that.

Go with cheaper than a laptop and the productivity thing. A laptop would be more of a distraction, you can play World of Warcraft on it

Sorry to have to say it but yes it will be a distraction. The droid 1 would probably benefit you better for school since it has a physical keyboard. As far as hdmi out maybe the droid x could help in making presentations in class, but than again, I still believe it will be a distraction, since its such an amazing phone.

I'm in exactly the same boat you are... college sophomore. I spent several weeks trying to convince my parents to let me get the Inc. Many arguments ensued (and by the time I finally convinced them, the X came out so I decided on that one instead). Parents are probably right however, a smartphone is pretty much unnecessary. The only way my parents let me get one is if I pay for the phone and the $30 data with my own money. I got a job to show them that I'm responsible and have an income to cover the costs, and then they couldn't argue with that. As far as the phone being a distraction, I don't think it would be anymore of a distraction than a computer or TV would be.

In college I had a paper planner that I never wanted to pull out of my bag and use. When I did use it, it was unorganized, and I typically wouldn't be consistent. A few times I even wrote something down and then relied on myself to look at it again: I didn't and consiquently I didn't complete a big assignement b/c I forgot.

You look at your phone all the time. It is designed specifically to organize in a number of ways. You don't have to worry about chicken scratch or about not having room to write. I'm sure it could double as a scientific calculator. It definitely can record audio (some professors move waaaay to quickly or are waaaay to hard to understand, and some need to be reminded about what they said was going to be tested...).

Your parents will want to talk to you: you're more likely to want to keep a smartphone close at all times (careful using this one cause they'll expect you to pick up just abt all their calls).

There are gym apps that help you stay in shape and motivate you and keep your gym routine organized.

There are alarm clock apps that do a way better job of making sure you wake up than some stupid alarm clock. For instance, one makes you do math to shut it off, the other makes you shake the phone a bunch, etc etc.

Being able to keep track of your appointments, test dates, mid-terms, final exams as said are all essential to the Calendar. Utilizing the HDMI out for visual audio/video presentations for presentations. Allowing you to utilize the free turn-by-turn GPS in order for your to meet with your friends for a group project. Having improved call quality with the noise canceling microphone so voice clarity is easier while talking to your parents lol

Ok well... here's my advice coming from a college student:

I always need my X for these reasons (not all you can say to your parents):

1. It's my music player that I can listen to in between classes and going to and from classes.
2. I check my university email and personal accounts.
3. I search around on the internet OUTSIDE OF CLASS to look up any information that I need if taking out my laptop is too much of a hassle
4. My university has a great security updates through texting (for example: immediate tornado warnings)
5. Time killer
6. Organization (I always use the calendar)
7. APPS! APPS! APPS! (that is the biggest selling point for me because there are SO many things you can do with a smartphone with a healthy selection of apps that are helpful)

You're a college student, you really should have a smartphone. Anything less is for high school kids and below. If your parents feel you don't need a smartphone while you're a college student, then I don't know when they're going to think you should have one.

I always need to have a Smartphone in college, an X would just be the best available.

1. Keep up to date schedule.
2. Reminders for important assignments/projects.
3. Emails from teachers and students.
4. Researching information if no access to a computer, or if the internet is down at your dorm. (Happens quite frequently).
5. Online access to classes. (All of my classes have a online blackboard).
6. Checking bank accounts by text or via web.
7. Ability to take pictures to study things outside of class.
8. Emergency access to traffic, weather etc.
9. Ability to have important files on your smartphone, and review papers on word, powerpoint etc.
10. Flashcards on your smartphone... (my favorite).

I really could go on. I use mine for EVERYTHING.

Yep. They will. They'll probably throw in the whole, "We walked a thousand miles in blizzards, with nothing but our eyes to guide us and we're fine..." etc.

Id really save up and pay it yourself. That's what I do.

I'm a parent. You don't "need" any phone for college. Get a job and buy whatever phone you want.

If that doesn't work, tell them you are going to record the video of every class and post it to YouTube so that the whole world can get the same apparently highly useful degree for free.
