Help Battery Overheat Freak Out Crazy Time

um, help? i picked up my inc just a while ago, and it felt a little warm. didn't really think anything of it. then i went to the market and hit download and found a bunch of apps were ready with updates, so i sent them all to update. while this was happening, my phone seemed to get warmer. so i checked the battery status on the pull down menu, and it was "Overheat/120.9F/3.731V" (this is what i wrote down; it was 118 when i first looked, then went up to 120). i checked the battery usage, and it was totally normal, nothing running high, nothing that it doesn't usually say (cell standby, android system, whatever). i freaked out, so i turned off the phone, and then i pulled the battery. the phone still feels hot but seems to maybe be cooling down a little. the battery is warm. there is a "hot" smell, too. i am FREAKING OUT. what do i do now? seriously, i'm afraid to put it back together.

it's starting to cool down now. i'm using the htc 1500 battery i got from bidallies, it has been doing a really good job for the few days i've had it. oh, that's the other thing, the reason i decided to even check the battery on the pull down is because my battery seemed to suddenly drop over 10% while the market updates were downloading. like, it just really drained quick.

please help. anyone?

i decided to try putting it back together and turning it on. i am watching my battery drain quickly and the heat go up again. started at 81, then 83.8, 84.4, 85.6, 86.7, now 89.2...i'm taking it back out now. help!

i've decided to leave it on for a while to see how high it goes again. i don't show any unusual usage. i guess low 90s is normal (from what research i've done around the forums). right now it's at 93.2, after climbing steadily from 83.8, but it had gone up to 94.5 before i put it to sleep for a few minutes. that's when it went down to 93.2. these are all totally normal temps, though. so that's good.

maybe this was all just self freak out. but i'd never seen the "overheat" wording before in the pull down menu (i believe that is my "battery indicator" app/widget that shows up there). usually it says "good health." i am all about good health. overheat, not so much. and i'd never seen the battery just drain out so quick, not felt the phone so hot. i guess i'll just keep an eye on it.

Mine usually hovers around 78*F in an air-conditioned room. In my car in the mount it gets up to about 85 with the vent blowing on it. People are reporting shut-down around 120-130*F.

If the phones gets too hot, it will turn itself off and flash the LED red/amber. If it just got hot while running all the downloads and installations, I would literally take off the back cover, and put it in front of a fan until it finishes.. I wasn't being sarcastic; if you're that worried about the temperature..

While the CPU is running at full, it probably would get up to around 100*F. Since it doesn't have active cooling, it would take a while to cool down, too. There are safegards to prevent it from being damaged though.

it's good to know it will shut down if it gets too hot. i did not know that. it seems to be perfectly fine now. i do appreciate the help. gonna try not to worry about it.

If you want to be able to keep an eye on it (I do, too) check out BatteryLeft. You can have the icon on your home screen show the temp and estimated time your battery will die (among like 15 other battery-related things, lol) I posted a review of it in the Tips section.

Gidget, your phone can handle temperatures above 120F but I don't blame you for getting a bit "itchy" about it, that is a bit high. The battery draining quickly was probably due to the heat; it makes it lose "juice" quickly. Where were you when this happened? I mean, what was the ambient temperature where you were?

just sitting here in my office, it's probably like 70 in here (if that...they like to keep it pretty ice box in here). whatever happened, i think it was already happening even before i went to download my updates from the market, because the phone seemed hot when i picked it up. although it could have been the market updates, i don't know. that's never happened before, and i've downloaded a lot of updates at once before.

i keep my inc sitting propped up on a spare monitor i have on my desk, and i'd been using it off and on all day, just texts, little stuff. not a lot of usage today. and like i said, the battery usage didn't show anything going rogue on me, checked spare parts, battery settings, etc. no clue.

i'm happy to say it's a cool 82.6 right now.

thanks for this...i actually use this widget, but had never selected the temp as one of the options to display. that has been updated!
