Root formatted goldcard

oh no, need some help.

My only SD card is the one in my phone (its a goldcard)

I installed rom manager did a SD card partition, it deleted everything on my card.

Did I just destroy my goldcard? Also, my phone loads up fine etc. but im on the stock desire FW and I have no market or google apps anymore (after the partition).

right, did a factory reset and now the market etc is back. But I still need the goldcard question answered please.

If you have formatted the card before partitioning then i am afraid its not a goldcard anymore, as you have wiped the card clean of all previous data

I'm not so sure, i think once you make it a goldcard, it's always a goldcard.

If the process of making a goldcard turns that part of the memory card into something like the boot sector of a hard drive, then it would be protected.
Think i will try formatting one of mine then we can say for sure.
You are correct m8 once it is a goldcard even formatting in your phone leaves it as a gold card.

Thanks anoniemouse, I partitioned via rom manager, got boot loop then formatted via pc which messed it right up, so had to re goldcard, reroot according to Lekkys guide.

My T-mobile phone is now rooted and running normal sense as Lekkys guide with Rom manager installed, whats the best way to partition for apps2sd without losing my root etc?

Bearing in mind Im using my goldcard in my phone so cant really wipe the card.

twist123, reboot into recovery from rom manager, there should be an option to reformat the card. This will wipe everything from your card so make sure you have backed up anything you want to keep.

I did a format in the phone & the folders remained where they were, but when i formatted on the pc the whole card was wiped to full capacity.
There was nothing on it at all.
Although it doesn't take long to make it into a goldcard again.

Hmmm, Are you sure the phone didn't put them there after the format? usually if you format a card in a phone, it formats it for use with that phone, placing a default folder structure there.

I stand corrected you are correct just run loads of different tests & checked using HxD hex editor & formatting doesn't remove the gold card coding from the card.

Yes you are correct did my latest tests in a card reader & also made a gold card in the card reader.

This is gonna sound odd, but here we go.
One of my memory cards is a gold card, but I don't know which one. Can I;

1) 'read' one to see if it is a goldcard?
2) use the same goldcard.img I originally got on a new, bigger SD card and if so, will it wipe any of the data?

Not sure about 1, but 2 I think is a no. Each Goldcard Image is unique to the SD card you created it for.

No, I think its specific. I didn't think it was but it is. Thats why you cant borrow someone elses to fix your phone after a bad flash

Just want to see what kind of code it is, and how long. Also to see if it has any relation to the Volume Identifier byte on the card

Also please try the following on your SD card.
Get ATCommander
After running it with the card in,
Do: Send AT Command:

AT@CID

See what you get, and if it is the same CID code.

My gold card is actually now someone else SD card. I can get it back if I need it but I haven't got access to it now

Ive been doing so googling and apparently it uses the serial from the SD card not the phone, so it may be universal.

Maybe it doesnt need to be in your android phone when created. maybe any will do.

Will be interesting to find out.

Yup..Googling certain cryptic programmers lairs tells me that the same CID can be got from a Windows CE phone or any other Android too. A couple of programmers claim to have written a program in C# and C++ which can get the CID in Windows. But apparently they say the SD card must not be connected to the PC in USB mode.

To get CID in Windows, apparently the card must be connected in direct PCI mode. And the program they've written is not generic, but specific for the particular brand of card reader they've been using.

As far as the program I quoted goes, apparently what it gives is not the CID of the card.

When you can use a HEX program to actually directly read the bytes physically off any physical disk, reading the CID code shouldnt be that hard. :O

I used to have a program called Norton Disk Edit which used to be able to read and write any sector off any physical disk, a couple of decades ago. Unfortunately, Windows has driven all those good DOS programs away.. Sigh..

There is a low level function called GET_CID which does the works. But apparently connecting to PCI mode and apt drivers for this are needed..

But for our purpose, if someoone has two Android devices, I wish they'd try getting adb to giveup the CID, and confirm this. The CID should be same with both devices..

well it cant be universal as my working goldcard did not work on my collegues desire when we tried to debrand it.
it had to be created by pulling the cid while the card was in the device

If anyone is still interested, format a gold card and its still a gold card!

Partition a gold card and it is no longer a gold card.

Keep the gold card .img sent to you by PSAS. in a safe place as it will work to re-gold your card, after you have deleted any partitions on it. See Droidzones very good thread about it.


EDIT: There should be one partition on the card filling the entire volume, and the PSAS images are specific to individual crads.
