is there anyway to turn off auto-lock?

I have been looking for an answer to this since day one. I came upon this forum and saw the post about autolock. I fired up my credit card for my 99cent purchase, installed it, and then disappointment.

So I searched a little longer and came across a free app / program called ScreenMode Widget. It didn't seem to have any instructions and it wasn't in my program list after I installed it, and neither was the widget. So I reset and tried to add the widget to my home screen after and it was there. It has three options:

1: Sleep Auto
2: Awake Stay
3: Screen Stay

To change between them just click on the widget icon and it will cycle through the three. From what I can tell option 1 will let the phone operate normal. Option 2 is the one you want to turn off lock feature. The screen will go blank on its own, or when you hit the top button. When you hit the button to turn back on it just comes back to where you were no unlock ! It seems option 3 just makes the screen stay on until you turn it off.

Hope this helps everyone who was looking for a solution. Sorry I cant remeber where I found it to give credit, but enjoy regardless !

Option 2 is what I use now that I found this app/widget Saturday. I got tired of having to slide the unlock to check text messages or see what song was playing on Pandora. It has removed one of my biggest problems with the phone.

Does anyone know if this would have a negative effect on battery life?

Only used it for a day and a half but I haven't noticed any additional drain.
I can't see where it would though since all it is doing is saving you one step when waking up the phone(although I can't count how many extra swipes it is actually saving me during the course of the day). Now if you are using option 3 then obviously the battery will drain quickly.

I downloaded this widget (screenmodewidget) yesterday and love it! Thanks for the tip. I also discovered that either the volume rocker or camera button will unlock the screen, not just the power button. I'll have to be careful when the Droid is in my pocket.

Good point. Might be helpful to put screen timeout to 1 minute, so if you do accidentally hit a side button, the screen will only be on in your pocket for a minute. Not too much battery waste there.
