Sell my Garmin after I get the Droid X?

Well I used a Garmin the other day and got within .5 miles from the address I was supposed to get to.

I had to switch to google maps - navigation to get the rest of the way.

The best part about Navigation over Garmin is once you reach your destination you get a Google maps Street view picture of the place where you landed - Unless of course it's a dirt road.

So should I sell my Garmin GPS after I get my Droid X? Is Google maps better than the Garmin?

1. Is there a dedicated "Use GPS satellites" mode with Google maps? Is this mode faster than going through the Verizon satellite?

Any other ideas?

I bought my wife a Garmin for a present. We used it going to Gatlinburg and the Garmin did not account for route changes due to roadwork, but Navigator in Google maps did. You have to pay about the same price of a good Android phone to get the same function from a GPS only device.

We returned the Garmin to BB.

A lot of misinformation in this thread.

The maps are not stored on the phone therefore you need somewhat of an active data connection to get it running but it uses GPS and aGPS to route. Cant just use GPS by itself.

Also you can dump your garmin if you want. think about it google maps is always gonna be up to date since its pulling from online where the maps on your garmin could be a year old and even when they do come out with 2011 maps the data is usually from 6 months ago

See, that's what I thought. In that case...there are PLENTY of places I go where there is no service on a phone but I would need my GPS. So I can't ditch my gps.

The Droid navigation would have to really impress me to get me to stop using my Garmin. I've got a nuvi 650 with lifetime traffic and map updates. I also download POI's for red light cameras and speed cameras monthly. It has never let me down.

In my experience, most people's navigation issues with portable GPS units are due to having outdated maps.

I agree. I have a nuvi 655T with lifetime traffic and 4-times per year map updates. The traffic receiver itself is worth keeping the Garmin. Can't count the number of times it's saved me from getting stuck in massive traffic jams. Plus, I think I'd miss that sweet female british voice telling me where to go. ;)

But I'll take advantage of the X's google maps when I'm a pedestrian in an unfamiliar city. It'll surely be less clumsy than the Garmin to use in that capacity.

That is the point. You have to pay several hundred bucks (service and device) to get a more dynamic GPS device as far as current road conditions.

If you already have a larger screen Android device, why bother?
