Evo's Performance Plumeting??

Has anyone else noticed their Evo's performance going into the dumpster?? Even with a task killer (no auto-kill, just manually managing) my phone is getting pretty sluggish, even on simple tasks, with all tasks cleared out. I've also noticed killing all apps doesn't free up as much memory as it used to. With everything cleared out it was showing around 150mb free. Now I'm down to around 100 after ending all tasks, and that 50mb seems to be making a pretty big difference.

Is 512mb the correct spec for this phone, and the system and essential tasks are only leaving 150-200mb for me to play with? How much free memory are some of you Android vets seeing??

Where can I find a resource that'll let me know exactly which tasks/apps are safe to end so I can maximize the phone's memory wiggle room?

As a first time Android user, should I just get used to having to reboot the phone every week or so to keep it looking healthy?

I am seeing the same with performance drop off. There are constantly many apps running, none of which i am using. i notice the sluggish perf and when open ATK mem is usually in the 40's. i kill whatever it recommends and im back in business at around 150-160 depending.

This doesnt seem like something i should have to do daily and would also like some suggestions on how to avoid

... dont worry about how much free memory you have you need 50m to run properly and get rid of the task killer thats what is causing the memory issues. its creating memory artifacts and that is why you are getting less and less memory. i havnt restarted my phone since the ota and i have 150 free without a task manager

Yes I've read many articles about how you don't need task managers, and have been interested to get rid of the one I'm using to see what would happen. I'll start that experiment now :)

We'll see if that addresses the sluggeshness too...?

BTW how do you read the memory info at the buttom of the Running Services screen??

Avail: 79MB+141MB in 15 Other: 75MB in 4

I think you read my mind. You noted everyone of my observations including my checking the specs several times to try to verify the RAM since it seemed like much less than advertised. All that being said, I love my EVO, still the best phone I have seen.

You must have a special phone or don't open any apps. My memory is down to 50 or below in no time, within a few hours, and I don't have a task killer. I used to have a task killer and to me that helped alot as from my personal experience the task killers perform contrary to what their opponents would have you believe.

Try "Quick Clean Cache". I don't use ATK anymore. No need. I do experience some sluggishness but thats only when I switch scenes maybe. But overall I like this app. It will let you know how much internal memory you have in your phone. You can set to notify you when the cache gets to a certain level so you can go clear it out. This will help your phone run a tad bit faster. I suggest to remove apps you don't need. We only have 1GB of internal memorty

No.

Phone performance is not like milk - it doesn't go sour with time. You must have installed some new app with memory leak or extensive background updating.

Wipe your phone clean, restore your apps a few at a time and see if the performance goes back to normal. Dumping your task killer would be one of the first thing to try, as others already suggested.

FWIW, I just check my phones mem and its was down to 60m av (via system panel). Checking the up v awake time it was creeping up toward 100% again, 117:x:x and 107:x:x.

My battery was down to 51% ( via system panel, though the icon appears to show at least 60%)from unplugging this morning at around 8am till now 2:40pm with no other use than and estimated 30min talk time on BT and 2 emails, in good coverage all day. This appears to be more than normal battery drain for me and coincides with the up v awake time.

I have noticed the past couple days that I have been seeing the sync symbol on a regular basis which I dont believe is normal behavior for my phone.

My sync settings allow for background data and auto sync, news and stocks disabled, google (calender contacts and gmail) and weather (3hours) allowed to sync.

I use startup auditor to disable and keep disabled Amazon, facebook, flickr, gtalk, news, peep, sprint football live, and sprint zone.

I do not use a task killer, though I have system panel paid installed.

** I do want to add that I use pandora frequently and no doubt sometimes dont exit it through the menu. I believe I read somewhere before that pandora could create a no sleep situation if not exited properly. I dont have monitoring enabled on sys panel, since I haven't had any problems recently, so I didnt bother to check what apps were running. I had pandora lock up the phone for a bit and force close a couple times last saturday (in Irvine with spotty signal strength and occasional roam), may have not used it since and that coincides with the awake time. I understand that this doesnt pertain to this thread, but what the heck I was on a roll!, will post this excerpt in the up time thread.

The good news is that I turned the phone off and back on again, mem is at floating between 218 and 223av and the phone has returned to sleeping. I can live with restarting the phone once a week or so to get back to better operating params, and would rather do that than use a task killer.

In response to Sagedil, or perhaps just a further suggestion adding to his advice, If you choose to get rid of the task killer, then also do a factory data reset as some have reported problems continuing even though the task killer was uninstalled. I couldnt say if that is the case or not, but it is worth a shot if all else fails.

Comming from a pure user's viewpoint I have to disagree with this. There were bugs, some of which occurred with pre-installed apps, namely calendar and facebook off the top of my head that created problems that the last update (at least for FB) supposedly corrected. It is very easy to say that its a downloaded app creating the problem, though I HAD extensive not sleeping problems that were not able to be tracked down. Restarting, battery pull, FDR, none of them alleviated the problem. I finally got to the point of having no installed apps (not by uninstallijng them but by doing a FDR each time) and the problem persisted. After the update the problems pretty much went away.

I do want to add that though my mem was reported to be 60, I didnt notice any sluggishness so I make no conclusions that having a reported memory of 200+ is of any benefit.

Many state how well android handles memory, and I am inclined to believe them. It is easy to see a low number and think the phone will perform better with a higher number. Those that are seeing diminished performance will understandably have a different opinion. My point is that I wouldnt use a task killer just so I can see a higher free mem number assuming all else is working properly. I would happily restart on occasion though for the same effect, placebo or not :)

FWIW, soon after I picked up my first Samsung Moment (Nov of last year) I found that something was causing random programs to launch in the background. Through some effort I eventually narrowed it down to the foxnews widget/app. I'm not saying that this app is causing your problems, but just know that some apps are capable of this type of glitch that causes apps to randomly launch and bog down your phone.

Also, I don't find it to be a terrible thing to have an appkiller. So long as you do not run the appkiller in the background all the time expecting its auto-kill abilities to help, you should be ok. In other words, keep it and use it when and if you like, but make sure that while you are killing other apps you also make it kill itself.
