Proximity Sensor function

Hm, it's an interesting idea, but it wouldn't be very practical, unfortunately. Then, every time you had the sensor covered (by, say, holding the phone in landscape mode) you would keep turning the screen off.
im not sure how you hold your phone when in landscape, but i dont cover the prox sensor any time unless i'm on a phone call.

incorporating the light sensor (implying an app existed for this) might solve this issue, at least somewhat.

Make sure there's nothing magnetic in your pocket.
this would have nothing to do with anything I am talking about.

Each person is going to hold their phone differently, but I definitely cover up the sensor when I hold it. That being said, there might be a way to pull it off for those who don't. I'm just getting started developing myself, so I'm not sure what is available in terms of the proximity sensor...

Just curious, where is the prox sensor on the droid?
next to the light sensor, upper right part of the front.
It would if you had something magnetic in your pocket.
what? 1) who carries magnets around in their pocket, 2) it does not affect the proximity sensor or light sensors, so it has nothing to do with this thread. the way a magnet will affect the droid is the same regardless of the functionality being discussed here.

does anybody else think it'd be nice to just slip the phone into your pocket and it turns off the display? have it function so there's about a 5 second buffer until your phone display is turned off, so it makes sure its in a pocket and not just something briefly covering the prox sensor.
