Recomend an MP4 converter for Droid

After reading a few threads, I realize I have to convert video files to MP4. I tried a few Google searches but you get a bunch of crap.
Can someone please recommend a converter that works well with the Droid.

Also what resolution do I use when I convert them?
I've read that there are good free ones, I dont mind paying for one, if it is a solid program, but if Im just going to get frustrated with it I would prefer a trial or demo or free one.

I've heard of two good free ones... I forget the first, but I believe the second is Handbrake.

I have not tried this particular program yet but I have used their other versions for the PSP, the Xbox 360, and for the iPod and they've always worked great.

On the first tab, where the arrow points.



And only put in the 480 dimension for the height, as I did. Leave the horizontal field blank. This way, any video you use as a source will remain in it's proper aspect ratio, but always fill the screen vertically. Whether it's a widescreen movie that will fill the whole screen, or a TV show that's only 720 pixels wide, it'll always be as large as possible for the Droid's screen. You don't have to worry about constantly changing the horizontal number to match the aspect ratio fo the video file. It's possible Handbrake takes this into account already and won't stretch and distort video to force-fit it into 854 px, but this way definitely gets the job done for any video you want to use.

Make all the settings--dimensions, codec and container, audio settings, bitrate...and then you can save the profile as "Droid" and have it handy anytime you want to convert.

The guy who writes that software just jumps on whatever new phone is out, and says it's for that phone specifically so people will download it. Must get paid from the ads in the software.

There is nothing in it specifically for Droid. Use handbrake.

Edit: It finishes instantly and the file is empty. What am I doing wrong?

What values did you set for all those?

480 for height, auto for the rest of the main page; video: H.264, constant quality at 90%; audio: AAC stereo at 160kbps. It doesn't really matter what I pick because every time it just finishes instantly and gives me a filesize of around 50B.

Well I had intended my question for whoever posted the screenshot above...but I read your reply and entered those settings lol so now nomatter how many times I uninstall and reinstall, handbrake wont work for me, it just instantly finishes...

What is your PC's specs? Have you tried running the program in Adminstrator Mode if you're using Vista or 7?

Im running Vista home premium on a 32 bit system, the converter was working fine on the very first conversion i tried, but i had to stop it halfway. After that I tried to do the same file later with the other settings, and it wouldnt do it. Then I tried to set it back to how I had it when it was working, and it wouldnt work. It just finishes instantly but it really hasnt converted anything..

I just use DoubleTwist. I just drop whatever movie/video, in any format, onto Doubletwist and let it convert/sync it over to the phone. No need to do anything else. Works everytime for me and comes out full screen looking better than I ever could expect. Most of my files start off avi. if it helps. Some transfer in about 45 minutes while other take about 2 hours but they come out looking great. I am not a big fan of the Doubletwist program but it is hard to argue with a drag-&-drop program that works everytime. I transfer my music manually.

The only thing that bothers me is I haven't figured out a way to name each video other than making individual folder so I can tell them apart. Wish I could just name each one so I could put them all in one folder.
