Galaxy S vs Desire

Theres some SGS vs Desire threads in the SGS section, and people have been leaning towards the SGS(its in the SGS section after all!),so I wanted to get some perspective here.

The points that I can see SGS above the Desire are:
-More ROM to install apps
-Has internal memory (8/16Gb)
-Better screen- supports true multi-touch, and not Desire's dual-touch
-1Ghz +dedicated GPU= no lag at any current apps/games.
-thin and lighter
-DivX support
-Free Document editor without having to buy Documents to GO etc.
-720p video and better camera- even with no flash, its night mode is impressive. Yes- I've seen photo samples, and SGS is definitely better.

Now the bad points..
-Honestly- bad built. Reeally ugly buttons. Huge Home button wtf?
-I'm in doubt about Samsung giving the SGS Froyo. (aka SGS= no adobe flash)
-a tad big...why are high end phones so big? I don't really see big screen as a good point.
-Only 3 buttons- menu is sacrificed for Search function, instead of calling up keyboard.
-no LED notification.

Non-issues include Sense UI as Home launchers can easily replace. HTC's widgets likewise can be replaced by current and future apps.


But those above are just 'on paper' and own opinions. To Desire users, whats your opinion- if money/carrier was also non-issue, would you swap the Desire for the SGS?
And if not what stops you so (ignoring my non-issues please).

If someone who has used both can also give some opinion it would be nice.


I am coming from a Legend (using Openhome). I take HEAPS of photos/video, surf alot, SMS alot and would like to play some better games on my phone. I rarely use GPS (just discovered wonders of Layar though, but not dependent on it for real purpose).I also like to have a good looking phone bu from my perspective both the Desire and the SGS are pretty similar in my 'looks scale'. Coming from a Legend user who chose Legend even after Desire came out! (not regretting- but just saying, Legend def. looks the best of all Androids out IMO).

I chose the Desire over waiting for the SGS recently for:

looks: not only is the SGS plasticy it looks like a plasticy last gen Iphone, double whammy
camera flashhtc don't make great cameras but are you really saying the SGS is better at night with no flash? )
track ball
distrust of Samsung re-updates
price (

SGS looks like a chinese Ai-phone.
Looks really cheap, and tries to mimic iphone in looks, icons, menu, messagebubbles and maybe more I didn't notice.
Way to big and bulky in my opinion.

The sgs has a superior screen.
I wouldn't swap my desire for one regardless, HTC do upgrade the firmware.
Samsung on the other hand have a bad reputation for updating firmware.

I've had a couple of Samsung phones and they were a nightmare - great on paper, but oh so fragile hardware & buggy firmware. It'll be a while before I'll fall for that again...

I have never owned a samsung phone; mainly as every one I tried felt cheap and flimsy, slow and unresponsive, and of generally poor quality... The specs for the SGS are certainly impressive, but from what I have seen in review videos and the like, it has a curious lag in moving between homescreens and in opening apps (actually, a similar reason for unrooting my desire, as the roms I tried had curious lags or the screen was noticeably less responsive), but there is always the 'only a test-model' defence. Nevertheless, the much touted video of Doom (vs the desire) sure looked good, although there was no indication the fones were comparably tweaked. But, I value general, day to day speed and responsiveness over selective apps and games. My desire is a fone/messaging first and foremost, games come quite near the bottom of my list

In my opinion, the HTC feels like a finished, quality product. The Samsung feels like a cheap iPhone knockoff. Samsung will probably just sell you the phone then forget you exist, whereas HTC are working on an update.

well, the SGS actually has 8/16Gb internal memory as well as a slot for MicroSD card which likewise supports up to 32Gb...unfortuneatly the SGS has quite a doubtful future whether it will recieve a Froyo upgrade but having around 500Mb of ROM to install apps I doubt I will use that many apps (like assuming 7Mb apps on average- 70 apps!)

The SGS already has received a firmware upgrade which removes this lag (according to some review on youtube), and newer SGS's have been opened to re-flash these to the new firmware, resulting in double seals on the box.

I dunno... the SGS's true multi-touch allows support for more apps( I dunno, really only 20 more at most) because some of them do not work properly for the HTC phones due to its inability to correctly see even two points of contact. (e.g piano, drawing apps, etc)


Would you still choose the Desire supposing this is true?
I'm actually leaning towards the Desire atm because I ruled out Camera completely, resolving that if I really need to take photos at an event I would bring my camera...

Still- the 500mb of available ROM for apps sounds luring since I cbf rooting.

You're right, the low internal memory on the Desire is a definite put off. But believe me it won't bother you much especially when Froyo comes out.
I also detest Samsung phones as I've had experience with some of them. They look so good on paper but they always seem to screw you in the end..

Every Samsung phone I've ever had has developed a hardware fault. I've had tons of phones the only make I have ever had problems with is Samsung.

I will avoid Samsung like the plague

I was thinking of buying Galaxy and dump Desire but after reading most of the Galaxy forum I will keep my desire.

The three things the made me continue to be a Desire boy:

1- 2.2 will reach Desire ages before Galaxy gets it(if it will get it).

2- GPS is reported to be awful, I use many navigation apps and i also like to keep record of my exercises.

3- It seems to lag a bit sometimes, like the video posted earlier showed. Even I was pissed off and only of watching it.

The extra internal memory and gfx power was definitely tempting to me, but I rationalized thus: Unless the Galaxy series is a huge phenomenon that it topples iPhone as the consumer phone of choice, then there's not going to be anyone developing to use that graphics power. Maybe 6-12 months down the line they will be, when we have stuff like the 1.5Ghz snapdragons and mobile dual core and all that awesome for them to play with, but for now, its just going to be sitting there not doing a lot. Currently, if a game definitely needs more juice than Desire and its snapdragon sisters can play, the mobile developers aren't going to be making it.

The galaxy has good benchmark chops, but without apps to make use of them, the patchy GPS problems, lack of flash and potential lack of FroYo (or further down the road Gingerbread) are all big issues to me. No point in getting a 'bleeding edge' device and then have the best part either under-utilized for months or more (GFX) or likely to be lagging a long way behind in software terms (OS updates).

Internal storage is a total non-issue to me, especially with Froyo being so close. In general, I think a lot of people who have been into gadgets have a selection of MicroSD cards at their disposal, or are used to using the space at their disposal. I mean extra space is nice, but its not enough to tempt me.

Finally, although you can change the UI, I really REALLY hate that I'd HAVE to. I get that Samsung is pitching squarely at the iPhone crowd, and thats a great thing, especially with the built in storage. They are pounding on the door of people who are bored with apple, but don't want to move far. I think Sense UI is just gorgeous, and fluid and lovely, and its NOT iOS. I came to the platform because I didn't want an iPhone. Just because its popular doesn't mean everything should be exactly the same. Making your stuff more like the stuff your fans kinda hate with a passion, does not really endear it.

Also I am not comfortable using something made by a company who thought 'TouchWiz' was the right name for the hyper-geeky android market. Seriously... They could have called it ANYTHING, and they went with that.

So yeah, thats my thinking going with the Desire. Sorry this has gone on for ages, seems like this has been on my mind a little. Also the Desire is pretty.

Over here the Galaxy S is actually close to S$100 cheaper than the Desire on contract, but as you can see from my profile it was Taiwan over South Korea for me.

My personal reasons:
-Quality feel: both may be plastic, but the cheapo Samsung has nothing of the HTC's feelgood factor when you hold it in your hand
-HTC Sense walks all over TouchWiz 3.0
-from experience, Samsung firmware has about the support of a three-legged stool
-LED flash
-trackpad: extremely useful when I need a precise cursor for typing

Like so many others here, I must admit another factor was my poor experience with Samsung. My previous phone was a Jet and though it had some very strong merits, it was overall more bitter than sweet.

What do you expect, your in a desire sub-forum.

Neither HTC, Samsung, or Moto has made good on 100% of their promises. I say we crucify them all until demands are met.
