Problem w/ Handcent after removing stock SMS app

So I have a rooted Sprint Hero, and I have replaced my stock SMS program with Handcent. I can receive incoming SMS messages, but they do not go into the conversation portion of Handcent.

Here is what I removed:

rm: IM.*
rm: Stock.*
rm: Sprint_Nscar.*
rm: htcmsgwidgets.*
rm: htcmailwidgets.*
rm: com.htc.TwitterWidget.*
rm: IM.*
rm: HtcTwitter.*
rm: HtcFootprints.*
rm: Mail.*
rm: MySMS.*
rm: HtcFootprintsWidget.*
rm: amazonmp3.*
rm: com.htc.StockWidget.apk
rm: Sprint_Navigator.apk
rm: Mms.*

I have not messed with any of the DSC* apps or any of the IM* apps except for just the IM.apk/odex app (I had a problem with that before and rebooted a couple of times with different permutations of removals). I thought I was down to just removing stock stuff I didn't need, but obviously there is some tie in to a system app or some setting I need to change.

Any ideas?

Yeah, pretty sure you still need the stock sms/mms program whether you use it or not.
Even if Handcent and Chomp don't use resources from the stock messaging app (which I'm pretty sure they do), there's another compelling reason to keep the stock app on the phone and in good working order: There are other apps which use the messaging app for communication and they won't recognize the replacement app. They'll look for the stock app and if it's not there, things come grinding to a halt.

GeoBeagle is one example of an app which uses the stock SMS resources and I believe CacheMate does too, and I'd be real surprised if there weren't plenty of other apps in the Marketplace which do too.
