After sawing people complaining over their battery life on Villainrom V12, i decided to make a thread on: How to improve my battery life on my hTC.

So, what should i do after i install my Custom ROM?
Every time you flash a new ROM you need to calibrate your battery. The battery meter in the OS (Android in this case) is generated based on the battery stats file. Battery stats is erased when you flash a new ROM.
So, to calibrate your battery you should try these steps:
First of, you should DRAIN YOUR PHONE and leave it with no power at all.
Leave it off and put it on charge. DO NOT OPEN IT!
When the green led is on, leave it for more 30 minutes to charge. AGAIN, DO NOT OPEN YOUR PHONE!
Now, boot on recovery mode and choose wipe battery stats.
Boot to normal
Done! Your battery is calibrated now.

Down here you will find some useful steps, made by BLUENOVA so credits go to him:
1. Go to Settings > About phone > System updates > Update PRL (it's normal that the phone process will force close at this point and the radio will reboot)

2. Go to your dialer
3. Dial *#*#INFO#*#*
4. Click 'Phone information'
5. Scroll down to the first dropdown selection and set according to your preference below

I would say they are mostly good steps to take, with the exception of turning off GPS. Unless youre actually using an app that requires GPS, then the circuitry will be switched off anyway. So, unless youre using something like locale which constantly checks GPS in the background, there is no real point in switching it off.

Unchecking wireless networks when youre not using them definitely helps though. And one thing youve missed is to switch off bluetooth when you dont need it.

I've also found that it helps to switch off mobile data when i'm asleep. This stops a lot of apps which periodically check the internet (e.g. mail, facebook, twitter) from draining battery - i mean, what's the point in receiving updates if youre not awake to read them?

I was at glastonbury festival the other weekend and i found that i got 3 whole days out of my hero if i turned off mobile data, wifi and bluetooth, and just used it as a dumbphone. Recharged with a powermonkey halfway through and the hero lasted me the entire 6 days!

Who keeps the bluetooth on? I don't.

If you're writing a guide you have to account for every possible scenario.

In answer to your question though, just try standing in a busy shopping mall with BT discovery enabled on your handset and marvel at how many devices come within range. It's quite frightening how many people are walking around with BT enabled constantly. ;)

hmm frightening :thinking::thinking:

frightening as in "s&*$ werewolves, run like billy-oh

or

frightening as in "oh lord, these people are allowed to vote and and decide my future! Doomed, we're all doomed" :(

Actually, as the majority seem to be teenagers, both apply. :D

None of my BT-enabled handsets have ever defaulted to BT=ON, so I'm assuming it's out of choice. Must cane their batteries though.

As a general rule with mobile data, it's well work going through any apps that periodically access the internet (email, weather, facebook, twitter clients etc) and tweak how often they check for updates.

Changing access from once every 10 minutes to once every 2 hours makes a world of difference to battery life.

not being funy, but a lot of these things being mentioned, turning them off, setting them so they hardly ever update, shouldnt one just buy a dumbphone instead/?

It seems like a bit of an oxymoron, you get a phone with tons of features, and then you turn most of the features off?
I understand about wanting the phone's battery to last longer, who doesn't want that, just stating a view.

Hmmm... I'm not sure how you make the jump from 'disabling features if youre not using them at the moment' to 'shouldve bought a dumbphone'. Seems like a bit of a black or white simplistic view of the problem to me.

We're talking about tuning the phone to get the best balance of the specific features you want and battery life. Not all people use all of the features of a smartphone all of the time, so it makes sense to disable the features you dont use in order to save battery. I have no need of bluetooth - that doesnt mean i dont use email or a web browser.

I never said you have no use for email or web browser. All I mean't is what I said. Nothing else. Offense wasn't meant.
I understand about wanting a battery to last longer, It's just that the best balance for YOU, would not be the best balance for me, I don't see anything black or white about it. It's a viewpoint. Much like yours?
And for me, whilst I see the validity of not having BT on, or turning wifi off if one is not it range of a wifi signal, etc. I dont see the the point in having a feature packed phone if one is going to reduce it to the point of being a dumbphone.
My original comment was more directed at Icebox originally.

Think we should agree to disagree here lol.

Just to extend the debate further than need be.

I think the purpose of this is flag up to people what they may have running and don't necessarily need. It is then up to the individual to decide whether or not they need email to sync every 5 minutes 10 minutes or hour.

The point is that before reading this it might not have occurred to them to try and change it.

@stoney73: no offense taken, and none intended here either. As bzzzzz said, these are all options to improve battery life, i dont think 1ceb0x is suggesting you do everything in his list at once - you pick and choose the things that will help get the most out of the phone, taking into account the things you use it for.

Having said that, there is still the option in extreme circumstance (e.g. camping, music festival) to disable everything and effectively revert the phone to dumbphone functionality and get quite a bit out of it in terms of battery life. Still nowhere near that for a dumbphone, but it's at least an option.

I think it'd be very useful to have a comprehensive guide to conserving battery life stickied here (well, it'd probably be better in the parent hero forum). You still see people complaining about how they only get 9 hours or so from their hero - which i find strange, since i generally get a day and a half out of mine. I have to wonder how these people have their phones set up, and what apps theyve got installed, and whether they've tried anything in the above list.

I agree. The current stuck thread is very much biased towards 2.1 though, but once all the updates are rolled out I think it should be moved up into the main forum.

I'd like a "Hints & Tips" and "Support & Troubleshooting" forum added also, to make organising and locating information easier for users. I've put in a request.... just waiting to hear from the Admins.

I made a list with all the things that has been said in this whole forum, and put them together for new or old users of smartphones to understand and to stop whining about their battery. When i had the phone the very first days i charged it like every day, and i was ok with that because i knew that this is no ordinary phone. But when you don't need live wallpapers, wifi on, brightness at maximum and you want them to turn it off you maybe don;t know how to do it. And this is the moment when this post comes in to hand.

Remember! this is a post for the newest people with android but it's also an index of all the posts available here about "how to improve the battery".

I now get 2 to 3 days out of my Hero and its quite a joy now because, try to go to work with your battery full, make some phone calls and when you get back home, take a look at your battery life. Do you really want to charge it from day to day and add the posibillity to ruin your battery's life?

I found this website to be quite interesting, link: How to prolong lithium-based batteries

Check out at the bottom the SIMPLE GUIDELINES.
The fact that you should charge the battery at about 40% seems to prolong the lifespan?

I found this to be the complete opposite than what other people say: Completely discharge, recharge, turn off phone recharge for another 30 minutes etc etc.

Anyone can confirm or rectify?

Cheers :D

That's not what that page says. When it refers to 40% it's talking about storing the battery for long periods without use.

It recommends charging them the same way everyone else does: frequent short chrages are much better than full discharges, but you should let it discharge fully every now and then to recalibrate the phone. (Otherwise the phone may report the battery as empty when it isn't).

Oh, ok... sorry my bad. I thought I found something out
Thanks for clarifying that :D
