I have notifications on. It syncs with my gmail contacts almost immediately (I am amazed I can delete someone on there and it delete them on my phone) and it syncs with facebook once a day.

As for all the apps/programs I'm using... I use the browser, facebook app, text messaging, HI AIM (once in a while), Pandora, and a little bit of google maps and a little bit of Gmail. I check my hotmail through the browser unless I need to download an attachment since the HTC app doesn't update immediately.

So you only use the gmail contacts feature, no gmail itself?

I use Gmail but it is very limited since my main email is hotmail. It still must run in the background because I can send an e-mail to that account and it will notify the phone. However if I send it to my hotmail it doesn't do anything.

Oh, and I have location turned off - especially that wireless networks thing. That might have added to things.

However I'll tell you right now that the biggest gain I got was from removing the task killer. The phone has been on for 2 hours now, 1 phone call, 2 text messages, and its still reading at 100%. Its probably 99% but the phone reads 100% from my battery widget and in the hidden *#*#4636#*#* (Call) menu.

I second this...I installed ATK almost immediately after getting my Eris. I was worried about running apps and not being able to kill them. My battery life was horrendous. I read some other posts in the forum about Task Killer and uninstalled it. My battery life has almost tripled since then. I still have to charge it every night when I mess with it alot but at least I can make it through the day now.

I don't know...I downloaded ATK and my phone is 100 times better! I was on it for hours yesterday and it finally died at night, which I would expect from any phone. The day before I made 2 calls and a couple texts and it died by 5.

My phone died from it's out of the box charge, I charged it to 100%, and here are my battery results:

With wifi, bluetooth, GPS off, default Messaging service off (using handcent), minimizing several sync options, turning off the Weather Widget. Had an alarm clock set for 9am.
Used for probably 20-30 minutes of browsing, sent 4-5 text messages, 1 short phone call.

Taken off charger at 11:10pm- 100%
11:47- 87%

I have noticed my drops 12-13% in the first 30 minutes after a complete charge. That is doing nothing. All I have on is Gmail syncing. I am down to 40% after about 10 hours. That is barely even using the phone. No web access, 2 phone calls and reading some email. I know that isn't bad, but I am now scared to use the phone because of how fast the battery runs down. I really don't want to return the phone, but this battery thing is bad!!

So far I have had no problems. Yesterday was my first day of use. I started at 6am with a full day of gmail sync, about 12 3-4min phone calls, LOTS of marketplace exploration and playing with apps and games. Fairly heavy use of playing with a new toy. At 10pm I put it on the charger at 27%.

I didn't use wifi at all and only turned on the gps will I was using it. I also have not been using any task killer because I read that can't prevent the phone from going into standby.

While I'm satisified with the battery life, I want to know on what world would this phone get even half of the standby time claimed by HTC/Verizon. I realize that the number is usually inflated, and even at that based on almost all functionality turned off and the phone used very little. However, I'm going to say that even at those settings, with no talking or use, the Eris wouldn't even get half of the stated standby time.

I get a full day out of my battery. I tweaked a few of the settings (30 sec sleep timer) and always put the phone in sleep mode when not using it. I also put the screen to sleep while it is charging.

I run Advance Task Killer after I had used a few widgets and want to shut them down. I have been playing with the phone for the last week (some days with more heavier use than others). I also have my connections off when not using them (WiFI, BT).

I would say this phone is the same as my old Blackberry.

No battery issues here.:)

I should note that I'm coming from a Dare (not a smartphone). That is certainly coloring my opinion of battery life. With the Dare, I could use it solid for 2-3 hours of calls, many texts, and some light browsing, and not even worry about charging it for 2-3 days. With the Eris, I know I will have to charge it every day if I use it like that. I also know that even if I don't talk on it or use it much for a day, I'll still have to charge it that day, I can't rely on it to conserve its energy while on standby.

Well after using my Eris for a week now, I can say that I'm mostly happy with the battery life. Sure, I would like it to last longer... but it last long enough that I don't see it ever being an issue. I am too coming from a Dare, and yeah the Dare could last quite a few days between charges... but then again, the Dare couldn't do SQUAT compared to this phone, so its not really a fair comparison :)

For example, I took the phone off the charger at 4:30pm yesterday and it's been running on battery since then. As of right now, 22 hours later, I still have 27% battery life left. I used the phone a fair bit in that time, what I would consider average usage for me in a day. This is definitely enough (for me). I'll just make it my habit to charge it every night, and all will be fine.

FWIW, since my last reboot, my phone has been up 69.5 hours and awake 15.5 hours -- for a total of 22% awake time.

I was interested in this thread and decided to try tracking my own battery progress starting yesterday. I charged the phone to 100% on 11/14/2009 and began keeping track of battery level periodically after that.

Active apps included Mail, standard message service, Flexilis mobile security, Gmail, Facebook, Audio Manager, Battery level widget, Missed Call, Weather widget, Wi-Fi turned on, GPS Off, Blue Tooth Off, and Advanced Task Killer installed

15:11 100% removed from charger
19:15 92% 10 min of calls, about 10 texts, installed battery graph
12:33 69% periodic internet use and using Facebook
03:30 51% periodic Internet use, a few texts and browsing wallpapers
10:30 36% just woke up and checked phone
11:00 checked some phone info: Up Time: 135:50, Awake time: 22%
battery Level 4 bars, from secret menu: 35, Health: Good
12:30 28% occasional fooling with phone and settings
12:45 24% installed Handcent Messaging and messed with settings
16:25 14% low battery warning alert with flashing LED
19:15 03% after 1 call, 8 texts, 10 min showing Eris features to a friend

I also added a free version of a Power Manger app with preset profiles before going to bed at 03:30. Once the phone reached 30% it turned the WiFi off, the screen dimmed quickly and the phone turned off quickly when not in use.

Considering some of the other times and levels posted here, I am quite pleased with the overall performance of the battery. I had quite a few apps running and the advanced task killer installed, and my battery lasted much longer than some of the previous listed users who had most of there apps turned off. Being a new phone and the fact that I still havent figured out how to use everything, I am constantly turning the Eris on and messing with it.

As noted I ended up getting approxiamtely 28 hours from a single battery charge. I am perfectly satisifed with the battery performance considering how thin the phone is and how much I am messing with it. :D

The issue is that we don't want to turn those things off, but by turning them off, all we have is a phone and nothing more. If that's what we wanted for our money, then we would have just gotten a phone. But most of us purchased this devise to have a smartphone (which needs access to at the very least the mobile network at all times). If we keep all of these things off, then we have a dumbphone and have to remember to turn them on for functionality.

All I expect from the battery life of a smartphone is that with average use, it should last the whole day. I expect to charge my phone each evening, but I have to be able to at least get through the day without carrying a charger around.

This is right on the money. I'm coming from a Blackberry Curve that had a battery almost two years old in it. I could bang away on that thing all day, make lots of phone calls, Facebook, Twitter...and even with an old battery, make it through a day no problem.

With my Eris, I have WiFi, BT and GPS turned off. I have no email running other than Gmail and I don't use the weather widget. With minimal use, I can make it from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. If I use the browser at all, or do anything "fun" with it, that drastically cuts into the time. I can't even imagine being on vacation and using the GPS with Google Maps to walk around a city, or take a bunch of photos. I would think I would make it until about the middle of the afternoon.

I agree - if any smart phone can make it through one day with plenty of use, that's fine with me. But I feel like I have this cool phone with all these cool features that I'm *intentionally* not using because I'm worried about the battery. That just doesn't seem right. I have until December 5th to decide to keep my Eris or not. I really like it, and it's fun to use, but like the OP said, if I'm not using all the goodies....

Have you also followed the tip about changing the SMS application? Did that help battery life at all?

I've done the battery fix and still am not always able to make it through the day. I leave for work at 5am with a 100% charge. I charge it in the car so when I arrive at my job 30 minutes later, it's still at a 100% charge. By the end of the day at 3p, my charge is in the red under 30% stage. If I were to make a call home (I always do on my way home) without the charger, it would kill the phone before I finished the call. But I plug it back into the charger in the car to get the last bit of life out of it. At work, I have GPS and WiFi turned off but not BT. I have found that BT does not suck a lot of power and it's more convenient to have it always on so that it will always find my bluetooth headset. At home, it's generally plugged in and wifi is on, but gps is still off unless I absolutely need it.

On another thread (or possibly elsewhere here), some other people noticed that Bluetooth was the largest battery drain...maybe that's the problem then?

The SMS fix is only relevant if your phone isn't sleeping, I believe. I have very low "awake" times. Right now, it's at 15%, so I don't think swapping over to Handcent would make any difference. From what I've ready, it doesn't seem like the Eris has the problem with the messaging client - just the Sprint Hero.

I am now experimenting with the auto backlight. I've turned it off and have dimmed the screen to see if that makes any difference.

I have been tracking my "awake time" and I have been able to keep it in the low teens, well yesterday I noticed it was in the high 60% range. So I have the app spare parts to see what is keeping the phone awake, and ironically it was Handscent! So a reboot fixed that, but that was kind of strange. Now this morning I charged the phone all night, which I also think keeps it "awake" sometimes. But anyway I rebooted, and then put the phone to sleep. About 15 minutes later I checked and the "awake time" was at 100%. I checked spare parts and this time it was the Android OS. I had to do another reboot and that fixed that. So, I am constantly babysitting the phone to make sure everything is in order.

Since I got all that under control I was at 91% at 6:30am with 16% awake time, now at 11:35am I am at 74% with 11% awake time. I have taken 3 phone calls, read a couple of emails, some web browsing, Facebook, etc. Google talk is on, Gmail mail and calendar sync on, Weather app is on, Weather Bug is on. I also use vibrate alert for all emails. No wifi, GPS, BT. I also have turned off constant mobile connection. So battery life is getting better for me with some adjustments. If I could just keep it at 5% battery loss an hour with occasional use on a work day, I think that would be fine. I am hoping I can make it work because I love the phone!
