I did research on it and couldn't really understand it. First of all, I'm a smartphone NEWBIE.. never had one. I'm buying the Driod X tomorrow.. I currently have a crappy flip phone from cricket. I've heard you can text with it free? Does that mean I don't have to get the unlimited text plan from verizon? How does it work exactly? Thanks

I believe you have to use the Google Voice app to send and receive texts and you must give everyone who you want to send and receive texts from your Google Voice phone #, I also believe there's a bit of delay in receiving texts but they may have improved this.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

You need a google voice account. You will add your real cell number on the google voice website.

Then you need to change and send your google voice number to your friends. When they text that number, you can either have google voice forward the SMS to your true cell phone number that you entered (you don't want this), or to an email address.

If you don't do either of these, then you would use the google voice app native to android phones to see/reply to the texts sent to your google voice number. This will only use data and not the cell network and will not count as a text.

will gv voicemail messages show as a message in the native visual voicemail app? Like when I click on visual voicemail and I have a voicemail in my gv, if linked correctly would it show I have a voicemail there?

I've gotten voice mail on my google number before and it shows up in the google voice app. I believe you can have your real number routed to your google voice mail, not sure as I just use 2 voice mail boxes.

Yes, you can "forward" your Verizon number to GV. I think by dialing *XXX-XXX-XXXX (your GV number) you will turn on the GV voicemail service. I'm not 100%, I set mine up months ago, but the Google Voice app will walk you through these steps when you set it up. No need to use both mailboxes, let GV handle it all.

But when someone calls your verizon number and gets forwarded to the GV mailbox, will they hear the GV mailbox which may or may not announce the GV number confusing the caller or thinking they might have reached the wrong number? Thats what I wanted to avoid lol.

When you set it up you record your name and greeting, which is used when someone calls.
