what will the 2gb of data give me,,i mostly need to stream music 6hours per day and light surfing...,,any one here using this plan and can give me an idea of what i can do with the cap? i missed out on the grandfatherd plan of 30$unlimited.... i thinking of going tmobile, but if i can stay at or under the 2gbcap im getting the Captivate!!:)

It worried me at first as well. I have spent quite a bit of time using the phone, including a few evenings of pure use as my cable was turned off (oop$...)

I'm sitting at around 600mb used over the course of 3 weeks. If you use your wifi while at home that will help a lot.
i used this AT&T Data Calculator and its scarey! do you stream alot of music?i figure i need 6hours a day....plus as i said some light surfing,,i have wifi at home but also computers so i dont realy need to use the cell at home,,,,,and i have no wifi at work:(...calculator came up with 6.5gb for 6.5 hours a day and 100 pages viewed per month

Six hours a day for streaming music? Wow... Well to be quite honest, I'm extremely aggressive with my internet browsing use and video streaming on YouTube, and I can't even get past 1.5 gb's. Music streaming from Pandora or some other app is a little laggy on 3g so i tend to just play mp3s when I'm jogging and then Pandora is the rare occasion.

As far as tmobile, while I prefer the vibrant to the captivate, t-mobile has some seriously spotty coverage where I am. I'm not sure about you. Though I do have to say when im not in edge, hspa+ is FAST.

Anyway, my last point is that I tried a data calculator before and it wasn't even remotely accurate to my real world usage. 3g watchdog is a good app for monitoring your data usage though, in case you are worried.

thats good to hear that data calculator isnt very accurate! also wonder if i can switch to edge as i think that will help slown down data usage? i using edge now and i can stream slacker radio,i using a omnia2...but i only get 3g in certain places, like tampa orlando,jacksonville,lol...i only have the 1900 3g band...but damn i want the captivate,,i think i will give it a shot,,,,,yeah tmobile isnt very good here either in central fl.from what i seen on the coverage map..

Haha. Well the Captivate will no doubt pick up 3g. You'll probably rarely get edge, but I believe GSM phones have the option to switch between edge/3g radios. Trust me, as soon as you start using 3g regularly, being forced back into edge is a nightmare, but I guess the pain will keep you from using your data? :p

Yeah, I'm in north florida and t-mo is pretty shoddy stuff. Just a question, but are you currently on Verizon? Considering you have an Omnia 2... why not wait for the Fascinate? I know waiting sucks, but you're already grandfathered in to Verizon's unlimited data, and the Fascinate is the same Galaxy S as the other phones.

as long as i can stream for at least 6hours a day of music and surf at lunch time and stay under 2gb per month im golden,,, im a house painter,we all know how boring that can get day in day out!!lol....i am on att. using a omnia2 from singapore on a dumphone unlimited plan, but i wouldnt mind paying 25$ vs 15$ for 3g every where! my other option is waiting and getting a galaxy s from austraila or canada with the at&t 850and 19003g bands to use on a dumbphone plan:D,,,but i know the phone will cost at 700$

Get out of here?! My uncle's actually a house painter in Miami. Had to sit around with him on the job once. I can respect the need for 6 hours.

But it sounds like you already have all your options together then. You just have to decide which one you're going with. Boy is android putting those options out there... o_O

And another question- you're not on a contract?

Then I would seriously go Verizon since you're contract is up. You could pay as you go for att. As of right now, Verizon has no data tierred usage plan, but I think it's safe to safe it is aimed to be changed (when- who knows). You don't have an ETF to pay, you *should* get unlimited data, and you would still get the phone you want... if you can hold out for a month. And with a phone with the Captivate, I'm not sure exactly how att does their plans, but high end smartphones require a $25 data plan. Again not sure on that especially since you might consider $700 unlocked.
