HTC Desire question

Hi everyone. First of all, I cannot post my phone details because I dont have an android YET. I have been looking to buy a HTC Desire but have a quick question. I am in a position to buy a desire but it is sim locked to Virgin Mobile UK and I should imagine, it has the virgin mobile branding or firmware. How easy is the phone to debrand and unlock? When I ask about debranding, I mean, removing the firmware and flashing the device with Generic fw. Thanks in advance guys

oh wow thanks rtb35, you are a legend. What about unlocking the handset? Can you point me in the right direction? Ive looked at few unlocking solutions on the net and they all want money for an "unlock code". Im not mean, I just like to do this stuff for myself

I have never unlocked a phone before so im no expert but from what i have read on these forums paying for a unlock code is the most reliable method.
