Help Contacts w/o Gmail or Outlook

Greetings all,

I've been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out how to do my contacts w/o gmail.
Just a quick background I've been happily using my Palm T|X for contacts for many years now but I'm giving the Galaxy S a try to see if I can replace the palm, phone, old camera and camcorder with one device.
I've been spending most awake time sorting out the myriad of issues I've run into but the main one stopping me from keeping this is the contacts.
Since gmail pulls the address of every tom, dick and harry into your contacts it royally screwed up my contacts with my sim card.
So I've spend the past hour plus deleting all the contacts and turning off gmail contacts sync.

What I've been hoplessly trying to figure out is how to sync my phone & sim contacts with my pc. I can't seem to find any software out there to do this and I'm surely not using gmail.

Any ideas where to locate such a solution?

Samsung Kies or another app that's been floating around is DoubleTwist, though I haven't used the latter.

Kies will let you import a CVS file with the information, I don't know about DoubleTwist.

Found Kies but not from official Samsung site, hope it's not malware, and doubletwist is a media sync it seems.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear....Kies isn't out in the US, but is available if you lie to it and say your country is the UK. (funny huh?). then you need to load the drivers from here - http://androidforums.com/samsung-captivate/123644-captivate-usb-drivers-links-here.html

Kies is a no go, it's installed but only shows my phone as external memory, it can't read the phone book.

I'll be damned if I didn't just discover the same problem. It looks like the drivers don't work, at least on the Vibrant. I'll check the Captivate tomorrow when I get it, but I fear the problem will be the same.

Well I found a work around.
Since all my contacts were in my Palm Desktop software to begin with I just exported the vcard from that, deleted all my contacts off my phone and sent the vcf file to my phone then imported it, all set to go now.
Once the Kies software is updated for the Galaxy S phones it should be much smoother.

I'm sorry i do not have anything constructive, but why would you have contacts stored on your SIM? Or am i missing something?

Why would you have them on your phone? If it dies you can't take them out on your sim to your next phone. *shrug*

well you have them elsewhere, like on your pc, or google, or whatever. there are a thousand ways to backup your contacts. when you keep them on a sim card, only one field per contact is allowed (home number OR mobile number OR email..), so you end up having to manually correct everything.

Somewhere, there is a setting that controls whether to automatically add contacts to your contact list (sorry, I have a different phone, so I can't tell you specifically where). Turn it off, and you will only get the contacts you want.

GMail is quite flexible in the way it handles contacts and synching with your phone. If you don't want a contact or contacts to synch to your phone, simply remove them from the "My Contacts" group and they will only show up on your PC.

GMail also lets you back up to the SD card (and import from there as well).

Your contacts are always backed up on the network and are synced automatically.

Hey Muddy.

Another good solution to look into for your contact dilemma is the free MIQ app you can get from the market. You just download the app and it pulls all your contacts (and text, calls, photos ect, if you want) to a private online account. You can log in online and manage your contacts from the web. You can also import more contacts to your account easily from gmail or other places if you want, and they will immediately push to your phone. Pretty slick way to manage your contacts!

If you get a new phone you just download the app and log in and all your data will upload to the new phone. (So, you could even download to your old phone to get the data off their easily)

Could be a good solution to look into if your still doing some researching. Hope that helps...
