Thoughts on the Galaxy S?

Hey all,

I was just wondering what you guys thought of the Galaxy S series phones?

Being in the states, they're relatively new to being in the public -- in fact the one on Verizon isn't released yet.

My main questions include:

What is the battery life like? How long on one charge?

How does the hummingbird compare to the snapdragon? The 1ghz OMAP?

Can you transfer back to standard Android like you can on HTC phones?

Are the touch buttons close enough to the screen that you bump them while typing? (like on the Eris)


Any input is very welcome

I'm buying mine tomorrow, but I can answer a few questions based off what I've heard so far.


Battery life is apparently amazing. People have reported a day/day and a half of battery under regular usage. Standby time is 700 hours I believe.

Hummingbird runs well. Comparable to snapdragon. Some say faster. I'd like to see a side by side though.

Since Samsung released the kernels to the series, running standard Android can be done though rooting and installing a custom ROM.

Keyboards on the Captivate are here, I imagine they'd be the same on all the Galaxy S phones:

I own the t-mobile version, the vibrant. I have not once accidentally hit one of the touch buttons. I don't have much experience with a snapdragon, but i know my phone has been very responsive. All the issues ive had so far have been solved within the hour after a little research, and i was just being stupid haha. You can put stock android on it if you root, as i was planning on doing, but i actually kind of like touchwiz 3.0. It is a lot like iphone, but thats not necessarily a bad thing.
