I know some folks aren't going to revisit the guide to install the ota leak, so I will add it into a thread here. This is serious stuff. I don't guarantee it will happen, but it has twice already.

Without further ado, the warning:

WARNING! UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD YOU REAPPLY THIS PATCH OVER ITSELF. I HAVE SEEN TWO PHONES DIE OVER THIS. Dead as in, no power, no charge, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars. Go directly to jail!

Good to know. That sucks.

One member PM'ed me last night to tell me about this happening to him/her. I brushed it off as coincidence. Now someone over at XDA did the same and the phone just died. Thats when i figured I'd say something about it.

There is another case of a dead phone involving the OTA and unrevoked's tool, but I don't have a clear story behind it to know if its the same deal. I bet it is.

Probably, when Sprint released there official OTA, people installed it, and it came back up asking to be installed again, and BRICKED hundreds of phones. So sprint stopped the OTA and fixed it then released it 1 week l8r. Everyones phone who was bricked was replaced I think, not sure tbh, just know it was a pretty bug deal.

Well, thats something to think about too.

We know its not the software that is doing it. Its either the firmware or radio update. So what happens if Verizon does release an OTA with a newer version number, that triggers it on a phone, and yet has the same firmware and radio files?

Sounds like one big mess could happen. I HIGHLY recommend anyone going to an official OTA use the RUU method to revert to an older ROM before updating over this. It may be nothing, but when it comes to stuff like this, better play it safe.

Note:

If you are rooted, it doesn't matter, an OTA will not install for you. This is mainly a concern for those who updated, and yet are not rooting.

From a novice point of view (no offense)--yes.

From a more experienced view, no. You could load the stock recovery image the phone came with using the unrevoked tool, and then flash the update. Then re-run the unrevoked tool and put clockwork back on. I could upload the recovery image if you think you are game. I take no responsibility for any mishaps, however.

No offense taken at all. I understand the context and readily admit that it applies :)

I've done stuff like that before - the "experienced" route - but I just have too much going on to devote honest effort to a possible learning curve and pre-requisite reading before moving forward.

So if we get the OTA (official) in the notification bar, don't update correct? Not that you should anyway, Good to know thanks for the heads up. :D I would be devastated if I lost susan.

So again...if we have installed the ota, should we hold off installing any "official" Verizon ota, if notified of availability on our phones, until things get "shaken out"?

To play it safe, I would. If you want, there are methods out there documented for getting the URL where the update is coming from. One could then download it to their computer and update in the same way, after reflashing their phone with an RUU.

You know, if worried you won't get offered the update again.
