Root Ad Blocker

Alright, got a problem...

I uninstalled AdFree, but it still seems to be "blocking" my ads somehow. The ad area is blank, with the spinning circle, but no ads show up... and the app is nowhere to be found... Any idea on how to uninstall it for real, so I can test yours properly?

You will have to create a new hosts file, I will add a feature to do this.

Yes it requires root, but all Eris can be rooted now, so help your sis out.

Thanks for the tip, Revert worked perfectly :D

Now, using aDroid, I see ads in every app I can think of that has ads. Was I supposed to do something in addition to the "enable" button? Or is this just due to the hosts file not being ready yet?

And as far as the reporting... do you want it here or on XDA? (is there a thread there for it?) And do you want the app name, or the actual ad? (or both?)

aDroid doesn't use no stinking hosts file!

As original post says, the ad database is very small. I started from scratch, and unless an ad is added to the database, it won't be blocked.

I have to manually add to it (not hard), but I have to have reports of what apps are still displaying ads. I will be adding over the air updates to the ad database once people start giving me reports.

So yeah just mention the app here or on XDA.

Gotcha... sounds awesome. Here's my list so far:

- AppBrain
- ASTRO
- Bubble
- Cestos
- Coin Flip
- DailyHoroscope
- Dictionary.com
- Marbles Solitaire
- Movies (Flixster)
- Puzzle Attack
- Shazam
- The Weather Channel

Does it block individual ads, or "groups" (hosts? I dunno) of ads? I mean like... say you find 1 ad, and add it to your database however you are doing it... will that only block that 1 ad? Or will it block all ads from that specific advertising company, or anything like that?

Sorry for asking so many questions, haha :D

Thanks guys, some of them I have already added, rest I will work on. v0.0.4 tomorrow. I want to put it in the market with a nice database for beta trials at 0.1.0, so this really helps.

When I can, I group block. If I can't then I decide if I want to "spend" the resources on just one ad.

Advanced Task Killer

Wapedia are also still displaying ads
I'm using this on a Samsung Galaxy Spica so I don't know if that makes a difference. By the way is there a list of apps that are already successfully affected by the program?

Thanks, no I am not releasing a list, as Its not always successful on all ads the first time around. I really don't want "OMG U SAID IT BLOCKES XXXXX BUT IT DOESNT. ITS CRAP" posts that apps get when features dont work how the user thinks they do.

Not saying you would do that, just saying someone would.

This should work on every android device with su, even nand locked ones.

I'm still seeing ads in various apps that are already listed. I realize you can't necessarily update to include all of them yet, but I don't report them since they're already reported. Astro, for example, is one.

hallstevenson,

If people don't report ads that are still showing up, I don't know that they are still showing up. I am working ona diagnostic option, that will dump to a file for me. This will be in 0.0.6 and will help a lot.

I understand that aspect of it. I guess it's safe to say that just because someone reports it once, it doesn't mean it's taken care of.

You said here or at XDA that you're not going to post a "list" of apps that you've blocked ads in, correct ? That would help though... If you say "Ads should be blocked in ..." and they still appear in one of those listed, we'd know to inform you (again).
