To Qik or Not to Qik

I just checked their site. I always thought that video chatting was going to be $5 a month. But from what this is saying it will be free. There will be a premium package thats $5 a month for video updating and better resolution.

I never used Qik as I was using Fring but is Qik decent?

Also just curious as to who will actually use Qik. It's not as mainstream as Skype but Skype is too slow getting their app out and no guarantees that it will allow free video calls or video calls in general. And Fring is glitchy and not reliable.

I wish it would build in PC support. Video chatting to a PC would be a feature I would use. For now, Qik is great for sharing videos with the family though...

I use Fring, seems to work better for me. Unless I'm doing something wrong to call my wife on qik she already has to have the program open on her side to receive an incoming video call. Whereas with Fring it comes in like a regular phone call, not requiring the program to already be open

At the moment I have no one to "Qik" with. Fring was weird to me, like others I couldn't stand the UI. Even the colors were icky.

I was using fring, but doesn't appear to be working for me any longer. I have uninstalled, reinstalled. Downloaded the .apk from the website, ect..

But I have no video option. Not even for the fring test call contact.

No clue why its not working any longer.

But when it was working, my daughter and wife liked it better because it did not have the push to talk button like qik.

Why did I think you could video chat to someone if they were on a computer? Guess having thus video feature does me no good till I can afford to get my wife her own evo. This bites.

The loss of Skype functionality from Fring took away our only Mobile to PC video chat program.

Fring:
I got the video chat to work from Mobile to PC a few times but with Skype cutting in and out it was not as reliable but it was at least still something. It also didn't allow you to add people or edit your lists on Skype so I couldn't add anyone. Like most of you, I hated the UI. It looked really tacky. I'd have preferred a much cleaner UI. Also because they tried doing so much in such a short time there was little to no support. There were just somethings that just didn't work.

Qik:
What killed it for me was the $5 a month price tag. But as I said in my first post, I found out it still allows free mobile to mobile video calls. With a cleaner UI, I would probably end up using Qik. Like Fring you will still need someone with the app to call them but I have yet to really mess around with Qik as much as I did Fring. It is also stable.

Fring:
No Skype support anymore.
Messy/Tacky UI
Interfacing with other networks (AIM, MSN, etc) a bit buggy.
Other person must have Fring.

Qik:
No Skype support.
Clean UI
Video sharing functions working.
Other person must have Qik to do video chat.
Allows you to record a video voicemail and send a link to the other person via text. (Possible Premium feature)
I think also allows for live streams via the computer? One way only Mobile to PC not PC back to Mobile.(NEED CONFIRMATION)

Qik is better. Fring has too much feedback. The person you are calling has to be logged into Qik but does not have to have the app open to receive the call. Qik is allowing everyone free premium services until September because of all the trouble experienced during the launch of the Evo. Video quality at times is much clearer than Fring. I like it much better.
