Accessories Which class Micro SD card??

I've just got my new HTC Desire and already I'm filling it up with all sorts so I'm looking for a decent micro SD card - ideally the 16gb ones as the 32gb still seem to be silly money!!

My question is, what class should I go for?? I did read somewhere that I should be aiming for a class 6 but others say a class 2 will be fine!?!?

Am I right in thinking that the only difference will be the transfer times to and from the card as opposed to it affecting such things as photo and video writing to the card??

I've found this: Reviews - Mobiles at Play.com (UK) which is a class 2 but people seem to be saying it will work fine with the Desire??

The Desire cannot record video at 720P yet but the chipset and Android 2.2 can support this. So assuming HTC enable the 720P camcorder functionality later in the year and you want to use it then go for a class 6 card. This is my choice:

But for just listening to MP3s, watching torrented DVD rips, 480P video recording, photos, small (ie >10MB) apps etc then a class 2 card is enough. This is what I bought:

Oh I almost forgot. HTC have been stingy with ROM on all their Windows Mobile and Android Phones up to date. The Desire has 512MB of ROM. The iPhone 4 has either 16,000 or 32,000MB of ROM. There is about 140MB left after installing Android 2.1 update 1 and Sense.
Android 2.2 will allow apps to installed on a MicroSD card (if the developer consents).
On the iPhone Tiger Woods PGA Golf is about 180MB and Grand Theft Auto:Chinatown Wars is a 233MB download. A class 6 card would be a much better choice to run large apps. But games are the only big downloads. And Android is weak in gaming.
One last thing. Buy the product from Amazon rather than a different supplier. There are by all accounts some dodgy cards out there.

I've got the Transcend 16Gb class 6 mentioned by James above.

I'm happy with it, and agree that the future will be a lot more usage of the card for apps, so get as high a class as you can afford.

I wouldnt go lower than a class6 (although, you can get class2 cards that write at class6 speeds, there's no guarantee) Thinking future-wise, it will become imperative as 2.2 has 720p video, and complex apps on sd will need faster cards. But, you could probably get away with a class4 in the meantime if the class6 is too expensive.

I have that PNY card,it writes at more or less class 6 speeds so should be do the job whatever you throw at it.

And people are surprised when they get ripped off

Also do bare in mind eBay does not actually enforce Sellers to follow through with any warranties sold on products. I've been stung with this on an item which died barely 6 weeks after arriving

Some people always cut corners thinking they are saving a few shekels. Anyway back to MicroSDs.
The 4GB Sandisk card included with my Desire delivers about 2.2MB/s. The 16GB Sandisk card I recommended and bought from Amazon is delivering 6.5MB/s. Which is class 6 although it is guaranteed to only deliver class 2.

I don't disagree that getting the fastest card is a good idea, but it would be good to know some actual figures to avoid potentially wasting money on a card feature the phone can't/won't actually use.

IIRC 720p recording requires about 4mb/s so class 4 or higher would be best

Don't get that card. It is a full size SDHC card normally use in digital cameras, rather than MicroSDHC use in cellphones, so it's not going to fit in your phone.

SDHC is the standard for larger capacity cards. New phones can handle both older MicroSD and newer MicroSDHC, older phones can only handle MicroSD.

So, 'micro' is the physical size of the card, and the SDHC is the storage standard for cards larger than 2GB, SD is the standard standard for cards up to 2GB.
