Gmail Attachments

I use gmail. I get attachments. I am trying to find a means to be able to save these attachments directly to SD card.

For example,

jpgs/png/gif, not a problem
docs/xls/txt, I can peview, but not save them
problem is if I get a 3g2 file, I cannot preview or save the file. Sometimes I get videos from client's phones and I can nor longer view them remotely. With my winmo phone, I was able to at least detach them to the SD card.

Bottom line, is there ANY way, app or otherwise, to just simply have a "download" button?

You could read these email online PC ... and then download to PC and xfer to your SDcard ...

I some cases you may be able to long-press or menu the attachment and do a save ...

Well I know I can view from a pc, was just hoping there was a way to save it to SD card and view it with my media player, all from the phone

The Gmail app doesnt let me save any attachments, only preview, but i found a way around that:

Visit the actual Gmail site from your browser (I have it bookmarked and a shortcut on my homescreen) and you can download all your attachments through the web interface, no hassles.

Would be nice to have this available through the Gmail app but this works for me until the devs get around to that.

i agree, we should not have to use the browser to read our email and save attachments. it totally defeats the point of having a gmail application to begin with.

i cant believe this feature isnt in these phones. this and long-press speed dialing... come on. such basic stuff.

Here's something I just found out. My wife has a normal gmail account. my email addy is myname@myname.net, and I use google's email for email hosting. We both have samsung moments. So basically we should have the same interface.

I even access my gmail using the same gmail icon that comes on the phone by default. The difference is that I get a 'Preview' button for any attachment, which then lets me save the file to my SD card.

Even for the exact same email that was sent to the both of us, hers doesn't have that.

I can't remember how I set my account up. I don't think that it was setup as a normal gmail account, but as an IMAP account. And I get push email and everything.

So I'm wondering if we can setup the gmail accounts as an IMAP account, and get the exact same functionality, with the attachments being downloadable.

Anyone here willing to test out my theory? I can't seem to figure out how to just add an IMAP account without trashing the old gmail account on her phone.

EDIT: OK, so it looks like it doesn't necessarily let me save the attachment, maybe. But it does give me a preview button for what seems to be all attachments. And then it asks me what I would like to view it with. But I think that it caches the file somewhere. Because the first time I tried to open a 7 meg file, I had to wait for it to download. But the second time, I didn't have to wait for the download.

EDIT NUMBER 2. Now it seems that it was just a program called Androzip that was somehow putting that Preview button there. And it is choking on that 7 meg file. I have to force close it. I am about to test it out on my wife's phone.

yep same issue I was having. The only way around this that I know works is to use the browser and just go to gmail. create a bookmark and put it on the shortcut on the desktop. gotta a cool icon still.

I'm trying to attach files other than pictures. Anyone have an idea? Os the browsser the only way?

I know I can send from the sd card using astro but I want to reply to an email and attach an mp3. It defaults to the gallery whe you hit attach

Thanks..I attached an MP3 to a GMAIL...and had to Go to GMAIL through the Droid Browser (not the GMAIL APP) and then select the attachment. it auto downloaded it appropriately.

hmm, actually never tried to attach something, was always just trying to GET an attachment....

i dont see it either. anyone else?

I know that this still sucks and it's not the best solution, but if you configure the pop3 email client on the droid than you can add/save attachments. It's not optimal, but better than bringing up the web browser.

Just specify your gmail address and password, and it'll do the rest for you.

Simply go to the Gmail site on your phone browser you can download the file to your phone from there.

When you click on "Compose" to compose a new email you will see, right under the "Subject" line, a little paper clip and an "Attach a File" link, click on that.

No, this does not solve the problem, which is that you can't download attachments with the gmail client. What is described here is called a workaround. This app, like so many android apps, is half-baked. Why use the client at all if I have to go to the browser for attachments? This kind of thing really detracts from the usability of these phones. Email seems especially poor.

So, how do we send multiple files in an email direct from handset?

If we use gmail then we can only attach from albums. If we use POP3 then we can attach a few more file types, but still limited. If we send a file from a file manager like astro or something then we can choose any file, but, only one and if we want to add more then we are limited to either albums or specific and limited file types?.

Is there any way to add multiple files of multiple types from multiple locations?

I know if you have gmail, you are using that one, but I am using that and I am using the 'Mail' app, and if you log your gmail account up the the 'Mail' app, then open that app and on the bottom there are 3 headers: Received, Converstions, Attachments. Go to the Attachments sections and choose the message you want (might need to do a 'Refresh' command). Then click the right arrow and the "download" arrow to the left. That will iniate the download and when it is done, where the down arrow is will become a picture of the paperclip (attachment) icon for most programs. When the papperclip is showing, click that and it will ask where you want to save it.

I am now trialling this method for mail collection.

Surely there has to be a better solution than this though?

It does seem that the longer I use Andriod the more holes I find.

I came across from a Blackberry and whilst the overall technology and experience cannot compare, where Blackberry wins is on the fundamentals. Email push that was actually push. Whereas now I have to wait for the device to check at a predetermined interval. Considering the way I have it setup it can take in excess of 45 minutes for an email to appear after sending. But I have it set to check every 15 minutes. On my Blackberry, by the time the message had left the PC my phone was alerting me to a new message.

That said though, we do have lots of pretty widgets and fart applications to keep us interested whilst we wait for those all important business emails to arrive.

I have found that the best setup for mail, contacts and calendar id with Google Apps Premiere edition. You need to have a domain or you can buy one from Google for $9.95. You get a 30 day trial of which I am on my 2nd 30 day trial. The service costs $50/year after the trial period and provides many benefits:

Seamless syncing with Outlook, I use Outlook on my desktop.

I have to agree, "Can't save attachments from Android Gmail app to phone storage = FAIL".

Thankfully HTC Incredible has an email reader that gives you 3 options when you click on an attachment, Open, Save to Phone Storage, Save to SD Card. It also has a nice email reader widget so I guess I'll be using HTC email reader instead.
